In the era of James Bond-style weaponry, a professor in Belgium claims he's come up with a sure-fire way to make sure guns are only fired by a single owner, and is unveiling his version of a so-called "smart gun."

Jacques Destine, a microelectronics expert at the University of Liege, used his grant from the U.S. Justice Department to develop a "safe" handgun, and says he's finally designed a weapon which fires only when it recognizes the unique grip of the shooter.

"We have made a weapon that only fires when it is meant to fire," Destine told the French-language La Derniere Heure. "Our idea was to make sure that the gun could only be used by its owner."

According to the report, the new weapon contains 250 electronic receptors which remember the precise way a person holds the gun.

Destine found that no two people have the exact same grip, and he believes unique grip patterns are as reliable as fingerprints in identifying the rightful owner of a handgun.

He says the high-tech firearm can be programmed for someone's right and left hand, which could prove invaluable to police officers injured during a shootout.

The device can also reportedly be set for use only in evenings, on weekends, or even for hunting purposes by adjusting settings for a particular firing angle.

Posters Note:

It seems that the "feds", no matter what the budget situation might be, can always find another rathole, down which they proceed to piss taxpayer dollars. Funny isn't it, or would sad be a better term.

However, a minor injury to both hands would leave the LEO unarmed in a gun battle. And we won't mention the hackers ability to reprogram the guns for the BGs. Oh yea, hope the battery doesn't die.

It's bad enough to waste money on this crap domestically, but now we're shipping OUR tax money overseas to pay for something like this...:cuss:

Maybe im crazy but, considering all the crap that our government spends money on. Funding gun research in ANY way actually gives me kinda a warm fuzzy feeling by comparison.

And what happens when the person must hold it slightly different for any number of reasons? What happens when you need to give the gun to your spouse or police-officer-partner because you are incompacitated and cannot continue the fight. What happens if the POS gets wet during the downpour that you are stuck in. A million things come into play that will make this gun get you dead.

Make people smarter, not guns. Next thing you know we'll have smart kitchen knives too.

Who holds a firearm the excact same way, with the exact same pressure when they are relaxed, and when they are fighting for their life? I wonder how well this device will work with motorcycle gloves on.
