For a budget set, if chopping or other heavy tasks might be required, I might pack a 12" Tramontina machete, supplemented with a vintage Jap or Euro 4-5" kitchen knife, and a Forrester SAK.

I have a SOG Revolver in the truck now, but am considering the Ontario RAT-7. Also you can consider the $40 Schrade SCHF52M if you don't mind an import.

Himalayan Imports has a subforum on BladeForums. They auction off deals of the day and often offer blems at a discount. Blems are almost always purely cosmetic.

I carry a German square bladed entrenching tool in the car. One side is sharpened, and it easily will chop down a small tree. It came with a leather belt carrier, and when you draw, it rings like a sword.

I like having the hammer option.

I usually take a modded cold steel trail hawk with me.

Out in the woods, the hammer poll has limited use (for me) but it does come in handy.
