YouTube Karens are out in full force...

now you know why a lot of popular channels, point out when the firearm is cleared, and it seems a bit hokey - but, they do it probably becuase they don't want any liability or criticism.

now you have some content for your audience, you can add a quick blip about the firearm being cleared, thank your audience for all their comments and suggestions, and then you'll have more content.

I looked for your post on You Tube. Found some, but probably not the one under discussion.

I view a number of Youtube videos on firearms. I post some negative comments or corrections. Usually about facts that could (SHOULD) be determined prior to publishing. I am thoroughly disgusted by those who refer to a Smith & Wesson 1946-ish .38 Hand Ejector as a "Model 10". Handling errors, unless egregious, not so much.

I don't watch Glock videos much. Nothing personal, but Glock videos just don't interest me.

In the beginning, you did not proclaim the usual "disclaimer" and state all guns are cleared, show the empty chamber, rack the slide a bunch of times etc etc.:)

Total of 14 comments. Not a major issue.

Who would handle a firearm that wasn't cleared??

Assumptions like that are how people are injured in NDs. No gun is "cleared" unless you clear it yourself or see it cleared. Therefore, if someone doesn't see it cleared they are reasonably going to question if it is. If they are properly trained they'll check it themselves in spite of having seen it "cleared" by another.

I did a video earlier this summer regarding the recoil of various carry pistols.

I just got a couple of comments from viewers stating that I violated all sorts of gun safety rules and "are an accident waiting to happen".

I reviewed the video in question and all I see is my fingers briefly going in front of the muzzles while handling the pistols. My fingers may also have gone inside of the trigger guard a couple of times.

I was seriously offended by the accusations. I have served in three branches of the military, been handling firearms since I was 10 years old, have had a CCW for 19 years, and have never once had a negligent discharge.

I consider myself a very safe person in regards to gun handling and am a bit paranoid when it comes to carrying a loaded weapon.

In the video, before filming started, all firearms were cleared. Repeatedly.

I did not point them at myself or anyone else. I was in the middle of nowhere and alone. None of the weapons left my sight from when they were cleared and when I handled them.

Are the comments simply the result of internet trolls doing what they do? Or did I display unsafe gun handling worthy of derision and correction?

Great video, and i think you answered your own questions. sure there are trolls but there are some who are way more Stricter than us when he comes to Firearms handling. The longer we do this the more confident and relaxed we become around Firearms and that can lead to accidents and accidental discharge.

UNLESS, of course, you derive great entertainment by poking the trolls back to watch them blow up! (Which I've been known to do...because trolling trolls is fun.)

"Wow , i am so interested in hearing why you know that X is the best caliber ever and waste 20 minutes of my life arguing something that ultimately just comes down to personal preference. Your opinion, I mean "your wisdom" has totally enlightened me and I will now sell everything I have that isn't of that caliber"

And that is the story of why Bubba converted all his milsurp rifles into .30 Gibbs, including his M1 Garand which now has a bent operating rod.

My example had to do with revolvers, and it was soooo poorly done and obviously biased I promised I would never post it on THR.

BUT...I can PM the link to you if you want!

(And no...I didn't post any comments to his video. I could see the writing on the wall on that one!)

Thats the thing with putting yourself out there. You will get criticism NO MATTER WHAT. Just enjoy the fact that you are the one actually doing something. You are the one taking the risk. All the keyboard commandos can pound sand. for it.

I have watched your videos and I have no criticisms about the general portrayal of information or delivery. I see vids with self muzzle swipes all the time and though I do not try to let things like that happen with me, Im sure it does and nitpicking about it does nothing.

Dont actually do this....but tell all your detractors to go out and make their own videos. I bet you dont get any takers.

Some of the viewers probably live in US cities or countries which Forbid handgun ownership-possibly any gun.

Envy can create its own resentment.

Following the senseless tragedy on that Hollywood movie set, the "armchair safety commandos" might multiply for a while.

Thank you for all of the great responses! I will make sure that in any future videos, that I will clear the pistol/rifle on camera and/or state that it has been cleared.

I will also grow thicker skin. Haven't really had any negative comments on my videos before, or, at least ones completely off base, so two in the same video took me by surprise.

You should make a spoof video dedicated to "Those concerned" by clearing the pistol and showing/doing all the things you SHOULDN'T DO with a pistol ...:neener:

Yes and yes (but not necessarily worthy of derision).

There's no doubt that YouTube comment sections attracts more than their share of tolls. But allowing the muzzle to sweep any part of your body, including fingers and letting a finger slip into the trigger guard are unsafe acts. If you had been shooting in USPSA competition and observed doing such by the range officer, you could have been disqualified.

But from another perspective, if you are posting videos in order to demonstrate something to those who watch them, remember that some of those who watch are firearm novices who might not know better. So you might consider making it a special point to model "gold standard" gun handling practices to reinforce those practices for novices.

so two in the same video took me by surprise.
Just two?
I'd want three or four, all with about a dozen replies. Heck, that YouTube algorithm needs more vigor!!

Seriously, considering the mentality of YouTube commenters, that's nothing to sweat over.

You failed to show viewers the status of any of the pistols when you picked them up, and they all had a magazine inserted. Then there were the couple of occasions (one shown above) when you flashed your left hand with a finger on the trigger (and we have to assume it was loaded, because of the aforementioned inserted magazine and no demonstration of status).

Once you finished each round of fire, yeah, we did see the slides lock back on the last ejection, but you failed to remove the magazines. A fine point, but it shows a diligence of safe use that doesn't appear to be there if you don't. I felt that your gun handling was too casual for the sake of a video. The camera was too close to give an overall view of what you did with them outside the camera's field. As for having served in 3 branches of the military.....well, thanks for your service, but three of them? It's apparent you're comfortable around firearms, but maybe too casual for the average Joe, and a bit careless.

And, FWIW, I'm an NRA certified firearms instructor, CRSO, and have military and law enforcement training as my creds. I would have called you on several of the things I saw had I been there.

There seems to always be someone who has an axe to grind. I think some of these people are the ones that complain loudly and often that a six shooter will fire 10 shots without reloading etc.etc. They need to take it as a movie with an entertainment value and just enjoy it instead. I would just continue on and note the things you can improve on, then do so next time. Make sure there is a next time too. At least you made the video and gave it your best effort to date. That's more than most of the trolls can claim.
