After seeing a couple real low grade AK's my buddy had a few years back, I never had a desire for one, and lumped the SKS in as well. Untill today when I saw my first Yugo SKS, which impressed me very much. Saw them at the gun show, $179.00 in VGC. Like the feel and am inpressed with the build quality. Is this a fair price? Is there anything I should look for to ensure getting a good one? Any other info or advice you can offer?
Thanks,
Manny

That's not a bad price if it's in clean, minty, brand new, "unissued" condition. However, they are quite common, so if there are any flaws at all, you can probably do better.

They are pretty nice, tough rifles. I've got two in VG condition with a little wear around the edges. Around here, I've seen them go for around $140 in VG condition, to $180 in unissued.

They aren't tack drivers by any means if that's what you are looking for. However, they have decent "combat" accuracy. Mine do around 2" at 50 yards, some do slightly better.

Don't be taken in by a pretty face. I've noticed that in more than just a few cases the difference between a $120 rifle and a $180 rifle is the seller did a little cleaning. To some the price difference is worth not having to deal with the hassles of cleaning a surplus rifle.

As for picking a good one the basic list works well. Look for a consistent overall finish, check for matching numbers (bolt, receiver, trigger group, etc.), check the bore for pitting, look at the crown to be sure it's nick free and not worn, the action should fit tightly in the stock, be sure all the parts (bayo, cleaning rod & kit, etc.) are on the rifle and that they work.

The Yugo SKS rifles are one of the best deals going today. With just a little shopping I'm sure you can find a good rifle that will give you a lot of fun and value. Don't be in a rush and ask questions. If the seller can't be bothered to answer them, he doesn't deserve your money.

Heres a local connection

Try,

They sell alot of good quality guns and I bet to ship to northern Ohio you could still beat $170 price.
I bought 1 here in Indy and paid $170 for a pretty 1 and found the same rifle a month later for $140 at the gun show.
So shop around they are out there better and cheaper.
Good luck!
