This is being called the Cecil effect. Due to decreased hunting dollars Zimbabwe is being forced to cull off excess lions. The loss to conservation is estimated at $10,000,000 USD. Where are the cries of outrage from the animal rights crowd? Where are the Hollywood elite? Where us the social media outcry? Answer, they don't care about lions or wildlife

I wish I had an answer. Thanks for posting, hopefully this will be shared around the internet enough to be noticed by the MSM.

The anti crowd has proven time and again that they are not interested in welfare of wildlife or wilderness. Their only agenda is the cessation of hunting wildlife be damned.

What they should do instead of culling, is do like the Activists want, just let nature run it's course. In a few years when all the prey animals are gone and the lions and other predators have starved to death, take them on a photo safari of bleached bones, carcasses and no/very few live animals. Take them to the impoverished villages and show them the starving children and then give them a big round of applause for the great job they did.

Those folks don't realize those animals and many more are doomed without hunting to control their numbers and the money it brings to the area. If it were their livelihood that was so direly impacted, I'd bet they think differently.

Zimbabwe has more problems than just the Cecil effect.

1. Perceived political instability due to continuing land reform, bogus currency issues, and Mugabe's irrational behavior has made many potential hunters look elsewhere to hunt, lest their "adventure" become a little too adventurous for comfort.

2. Sanctions on Zimbabwe make inadvertently dealing with the "wrong" people there legally risky back home.

3. The possibility of more sanctions being imposed makes returning with trophies a potential problem.

Sure, a lot of people continue to go there and have a good experience - but it would seem not as many as before. And Zimbabwe's Mugabe has only himself to blame.

And as for the shooting of Cecil the Lion - I have it on good authority that Cecil killed and ate Wanda the Wildebeest, making orphans of her babies. He had it coming.

I'm thinking the predators will begin to hunt 2 legged prey before they starve to death. But letting nature take it's course is probably a good idea.

Maybe the anti hunting whistlling wombats will volunteer themselves as lion chow.

if the people of Zimbabwe don't wake and take charge and protect their wild life, who would?

Years from now, when animal population numbers show results of this, animal rights groups will point out that they were right all along. "See what hunters have done to the animals?"

Standard procedure.

Just part of the natural circle of life.:D

Like when severe drought hits and large starving prey animals are forced into smaller areas making them easy prey. Like when predators eat all the starving prey and then only have themselves to feed on before they too die off from starvation, only to let the prey animals regenerate. The good Lord made it so prey animals always regenerate at a faster rate than their predators......again, the natural circle of life. But it's not a pretty sight. Hunting takes a big part of that ugliness away, for both prey and predator, while generating income for locals while also protecting them and their livestock/crops from high predator/prey numbers. Another simple circle of life, only much prettier and the only practical way to have man and wildlife co-exist comfortably, in our modern world. Culling is still killing and no more pleasant for the animal being killed than hunting. Starving to death is much worse. It shouldn't take a genius to understand this. One only has to read the whole book, not just look at the pretty pictures.

Hey, why do you hate wombats?

Boy, you really got us in trouble now. All the bleeding heart, anti hunters are going to show up and pee all over this.

WOMBATS RULE!

As far as Cecil goes, after killing Wanda, well, maybe I shouldn't go there.

It's just politics at it's worse, these same people complain about the horrors of animal management, Mugabe and his chroneys, and others need to take a walk in Zimbabwe right now to survey the damage that all the extra lions have done. Get up close and personal with them, to get the full effect.

What caliber for Wombat? Hint. The M79 grenade launcher is known as the Wombat Gun in OZ service. They are tough buggers.
I knew a left wing political staffer who was dumb enough to approach a wild lion in SA. I wonder if the rest of her ilk could be encouraged to follow her lead.

Radagast,

My preferred weapon system for wombats is a wifflebat.

Poor lions having to eat politicians. They are going to get indigestion.
