About to purchase my first varmint type shooter. Been shooting deer of several types for 25 plus years just never got into the smaller centerfire stuff.

Boiled the cartridge down to 223 or 22-250 but uncertain on the choice of "base hardware." Glass for me is strictly Nikon. Just finished rigging and getting familiar with a 116FCSS Accustock, Accutrigger in 25-06 so I am familiar with Savage Weather Warrior. Despite my pleasure with the out of the box service of the Savage, I've got to admit to being partial to laminated wood stocks and stainless actions. I also think highly of the Remington 700 series. I'm not sure I want to live with the nine pound combination of bull barrel and beaver tail stock.

I plan to shoot mostly inside 400 yards and I plan to spend 600 - 800 on the rifle alone.

Opinions please, thanks in advance.

I would recommend getting a .223. The ammunition is cheaper and is available in a wider range of bullet weights.

I give a 2nd thumbs up to the model 12BVSS from Savage mine shoot lights out. A .223 is fun but nothing has the splat value of the 22-250:D

Savage Model 12...your choice of configuration, 22-250 with a 1/12 twist.

and uhhh...oooh yea, the splat value..as jbkebert said.

There is nothing like whacking a dew soaked whistlepig with a light speed 50gr bullet and watching the pink mist slowly float away in the mourning thermals.

Weatherby is a very accurate rifle, check into a SUB-MOA Vanguard or a Vanguard. You pic the caliber your self, but I would get the .223 I've never seen 22-250 ammo.

Run a search on the difference between .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO. If my reading is correct, a good, tight, accurate .223 will put you on a NATO-free diet: no cheap eats. :(

I think a 75 grain 25-06 has a pretty good splat value. Just a thought.
Unless you just want a 22 rifle. Then for 400 yard shooting go with the 22-250.
