LOL

"Need" seems to be secondary to most of the people's interest in guns here.

However I think it's strange that a compact CC piece wasnt included in the list. Or even a fullsize for open carry, if that's how you roll.

IMO, you need a 'personal defense' handgun on the list.

Need for what?

For peace of mind? Pistol, prefer 9mm or .45acp

For hunting? .22 for small critters, .270 for large critters, shotgun for birds

For self defense? Anything that goes bang that I can get to in a hurry, preferably 7 shot 12ga pump or semi-auto

For home defense? Shotgun w/00 buck

For keeping food on the table? Shotgun

For survival purposes in the wild? .22

For beauty and elegance? 1911 or any clean wheelgun

"Need" is going to be defined by different people differently.

The OP's "need" looks to be biassed towards a narrow range of hunting and neglects the "need" for recreational shooting or the "need" of collectors or the "need" of shotgunners who may hunt upland bird with a 28 ga or turkey with 12 ga or rabbits with a 20 ga or the hunter who may need 3 rifles based on the game he hunts. What about the defensive "needs" for a full size and a compact pistol? What about ...

See how "need" becomes meaningless pretty quick as a definition of what you need for guns?

I'm in the minority here, but I actually prefer keeping a minimal number of firearms. When I have too many to carry at once I start wanting to sell the excess off. I like to travel light. For absolute minimal requirements, I could go with my 94 big bore rifle/shotgun and my Speed Six. That covers all the bases. Even more minimal would be my .54 smooth rifle flintlock.

This thread is destined to end the same way my suggestion to the ol' lady did when I told her that she needed only three pairs of shoes.

When some people try to tell me I have "too many" guns, I just ask them why they go golfing with a set of golf clubs. Why not just go golfing with a golf club? Most of them start to rethink after that...

Thanks, it's been a while since someone told me what I needed. Especially when they have no idea of my situation. If it's all the same though, I'll continue to make my own decisions and you can make yours.

12 gauge

Semi auto sporting rifle

Magnum bolt rifle

Self Defense pistol(s)

Last ditch pistol/hold out pistol

22 rifle

22 pistol

Need for what? I could argue that this is the "need" list:

12ga shotgun (for bird hunting, home defense, etc)
.308 bolt-action accurized rifle (long-range hunting, big game, etc)
9mm subcompact pistol (self-defense/home defense/CCW)

Notice no .22 firearms. While they cut ammo costs down for plinking, they do not get you used to handling the recoil, double-tapping, etc like you could with the caliber you will use. Thus are a luxury item. Now if it was a varmint gun, cool...but isn't that what the .308 can do?

Economy is also a luxury at times....talking about "need" means just what you need, nothing else. To me, that's a potent shotgun, a very accurate and decently powered rifle, and a good all around concealable handgun.

I'll toss out a small list off the top of my head.

  • Nightstand handgun (HD) for me
  • Nightstand handgun (HD) for wife
  • Bedroom shotgun (HD) for me
  • Bedroom shotgun (HD) for wife
  • Bedroom fighting rifle (HD) for me
  • Bedroom fighting rifle (HD) for wife
  • Compact CC sidearm (SD) for me
  • Compact CC sidearm (SD) for wife
  • Micro-Compact CC bug (SD) backup for either
  • Small(ish) bore, big-game hunting rifle
  • Large(ish) bore, big-game hunting rifle
  • Good operating .22lr rifle
  • Good operating .22lr pistol
  • Magnum power revolver for hiking/camping/hunting
  • Good quality shotgun for bird hunting
  • Inexpensive single shot shotgun for use as loaner/kids' training/backup/etc.
  • Inexpensive single shot rifle for use as loaner/kids' training/backup/etc.
  • Inexpensive semi auto pistol for use as loaner/kids' training/backup/etc.

I could probably go on all day.:D

I told my wife I needed a lever action carbine in 45 Colt. She agreed, so I must have been right. I guess it didn't hurt that I agreed she needed a 38 special revolver;)

Here is my humble collection:

30-06 Bolt action rifle
12 ga 870 26" VR Barrel (also have scoped rifled slug barrel)
12 ga 870 26" VR Barrel with mag extension and optional 20" barrel
.22 semi auto rifle and pistol
2 - 5" 1911 .45s
1 - 4" .357 wheelgun

I guess I am done buying guns now . I have all my "needs" covered (HD, CCW, Hunting large and small game) and could probably get rid of some to get down to bare necessities.

I only need a vest-full for a walk down the street. Like Billy Connolly in Boondock Saints.

Okay... want is more like it.

I need lots of things !!! I want even more !!!
The list you have works for you. I need a few more.
CoRoMo has a good start.

I like how the OP's "need" list doesn't even include a good nightstand pistol in a defensive caliber

P.S. Be careful tossing around how many guns you only need.

Maybe your state will do like mine and decide you only need one gun a month, or every six months, or every year, etc.
