Is there any reason why there are not many questions or comments about the thompson encore rifle. Are they good or bad for informal target shooting?Any known problems?

There have been several discussions on this forum regaurding the Encore rifles. It seems that people either love them or hate them. I own a pro-hunter model and have 9 barrels for it. I am very impressed with mine and it is a fine rifle. Each and every barrel I own delivers moa accuracy or a hair better. I think to many folks even more so the internet crowd think they should preform like a $4,000 dollar F-class gun. They do not but if you want a accurate and reliable rifle for hunting and informal target shooting I am not disapointed. some folks are turned off by the amount of flare they get on the hunting channel well i don't get the hunting channel and the few shows i have watched were not worth the time to watch anyway.

I recently had a gent at the range critize my choice in rifle and that they in his opinion not hold accuracy. I just had to educate him and even let him shoot it. All of my barrels have Leupold QR rings and bases. We started with a .22-250 barrel. I fired five shots are 100 yards and printed a one inch group or slightly under. I changed the barrel to a .243 win and moved the scope from the .22-250 to the .243 We again fired 4 shots then did the same thing with a .270 win barrel and finally a .300 win mag. Then at the end we put the .22-250 barrel back on and moved the scope to its original position. Fired 5 more rounds and each and every round grouped into the bulls-eye at 100 yards. So in my opinion the abilty to take off one barrel swap 3 or four barrels and return to original barrel and original POI is a testiment to the rifle, the scope, and the base and rings. Solid gun that with a little care will perform like a champ.

I've got the Pro Hunter with 4 barrels (.17 HMR, .300 Win Mag, 25-06 Rem, and .50 caliber muzzle loader). All three rifle barrels are outfitted with their own scope and the muzzle loader is open sights. I get sub MOA on all three rifle barrels. Love my TC!!

There's a reason you don't hear much about em here. This is a rifle enthusiasts forum and as such an inaccurate rifle is an anathema to us.

I went through a BRIEF encore phase. I owned a couple three with well over a half dozen different barrels. With the exception of ONE begara barrel that shot OK I wouldn't have bet anything I cared to keep that these infernal things could print even one 5 shot group measuring under 3" on demand. I wish I could have invested the money flushed down the toilet on these things on just one super high quality bolt gun.

Without exception the only folks I know who own encores and like em are also the folks who couldn't hit a paper plate at 100yds 5 for 5 shots. All the guys I know who had em and are picky about how a rifle shoots doesn't own em any longer. My advice, If you want an inaccurate rifle go buy a $200 handi rifle. They won't shoot any better (or worse) but you can own 3 for what one complete encore costs.

It's worth noting this isn't an encore specific issue but rather a break action rifle issue in general.

The flaw in the logic with regards to bbl swapping is nowadays you can darn near own a complete entry level bolt gun for only slightly more than just the bare encore barrel costs.

And with the shotguns for the price of ONE barrel you can own a set of cheap single shots in all the common gauges

I knew krochus would be on this quick. :p

At any rate, I had an Encore pistol in .223 that would certainly shoot better than 3" at 100yds on demand, and my Contender pistol seems to do right around that so far(but in .357 magnum). Never scoped the Encore and didn't keep it as the trigger reach was too far, though. However, I wouldn't bet on the avg Encore handgun shooting better than the avg Savage Striker or Rem. XP. So yeah, no experience with them in rifle form, but while I think they're ok in handgun form I'm not really sure I'd go for them as a rifle. Too many other options available.

Next time I am down in Arkansas I simply must take you up on that bet:rolleyes: This is coming from someone who swears on the accuracy of a mini-14 and mini-30 boy I am convinced.

What exactly are you claiming to with rearguards to the mini??? I've not owned ore even fired a mini. I did set forth a challenge several months back that was finally met but only with a rifle as heavily modified as one can possibly be.

Just remember your unsubstantiated claims as to the Encore's accuracy prowess are no more valid than my unsubstantiated claims as to my examples lack of accuracy.

However I find it rather telling that I NEVER see these super accurate Encores on the range nor do you see any targets from these posted on the web. In fact I'm pretty sure I'm the only person on THR who's actually posted pics of groups fired with an encore

below are the absolutely best two groups I ever managed to wring out of an encore with several several barrels tested and hundreds of rounds sent downrange. With NONE of the TC barrels coming anywhere close to the performance of this Spanish tube. In hindsight I really wish I'd made a habit of keeping bad groups too just for threads like this.

You can shoot a bad group with anything. Good ones are a bit harder to come by honestly.

I wonder, not about the action, but about the role of how the foreend bears on the barrel on the accuracy of the Encore. The two screw mounting system has me wondering about an optimal way to tighten the screws.

This is also an issue on Ruger No. 1s. It is not an issue on my bolt guns since I float the barrels of just about everything.

This is a problem with break action guns in general. Depending on how held or rested the upward pressure on the bbl changes. This is why you see a lot of posts about shooting these for accuracy referencing putting the rest under the hinge pin.

WOW,after reading all the above comments I.m just as in the dark as I was when I asked for comments....guess I'll stay away from them awhile longer and do more research.Seems like it's a love/hate thing for encores. Thanks for your views anyway.

do some reading here.

I have a custom shop 7.5x55 swiss on a prohunter frame.it will print MOA no problem if I do my part.I am not going to get into the pissing contest here.
everything I have pull the trigger on went into the freezer and thats what the rifle can do day in and day out.if you want a match rifle buy something else.

I used to see everyone hunting with them when I lived in the VA mountains. Now in the coastal plains of eastern NC I don't see them much at all. I think it has a lot to do with much shorter length of muzzleloader season where I currently live. Most of the people I know who have Encores have the muzzleloader configuration. Everyone of them who has a rifle barrel has added the oversized pin, extra power action spring, and trigger kit.

Well my regrets for the wrong claim about the mini's. Some where some time it seemed like a read a post of yours on the wonderful rugers. Anyway I guess my only beef is that you had a crappy rifle that sucks. Now to make a blanket claim that all T/C guns are crap is a pretty bold statement. I commend you that when scorned you speak very loudly and often about your dislike. Hell I hate to owe you money. Hell i owned a crappy glock and i personally would not buy another. That by no means says that all glocks are crap.. Just not my taste. If i make it to range in the next couple weeks picts will be posted of results.

By the way the two groups that were posted of your. Not a damn thing wrong with either group. This a hunting rifle not a f-class rig. Next time I get to Arkansas I do want to go shoot with you. What part of the State are you in. I have a couple cousins in Rodgers and a buddy who lives in Mountain Home.

the sad part is if one of the guys read the encore suxs and didn't buy one because of that he is missing out on a fine hunting rifle.

one thing I would like to add about T/C.they stand behind their products 110%.a few years back I bought a USED contender in 357 mag.it was real used:).somewhere down thru its owners some one swapped out the sights and the rear sight was stripped out.I called t/c and told them I bought it used and needed a new rear sight.customer service said no problem and the next week I had one in my mail box and free nada zip zero.thats customer service.
try that with sav or rem.

They are great rifles. The addictive part is that you can have multiple calibers very easily. Stock barrels go for ~200.00 on the used market. You can go as high as you want, just like you can with a fixed barrel rifle.

You can find very high quality barrels used for around $350.

The used market is so active that I have only purchased three barrels new from a store or barrel maker. The rest I have bought through the web from fellow encore enthusiasts. On the used barrel market I have never lost money swapping or selling to buy something else.

You can have a very short 16 inch barrel that makes for a handy woods rifle. Or you can go to a long 26 inch barrel to reach out there.

You can make em as plain or as fancy as you want. I have both stainless and blued for utility and fun shooting.

Anyone who accepts a TC that is not MOA accurate is only in possession of that "inaccurate" rifle or pistol per their own lack of initiative to contact the company.

TC has an accuracy guarantee: 1 MOA or less at 100 yards with hand loads. The company stood behind me completely. The only TC I have not enjoyed is my 209X50. I just can't wrap my head around muzzleloading.

For what it's worth, and I have said this before, it is a TC Contender still holds the world record for 500 yard pistol accuracy. I believe the group measured 0.75" by 3.5". The group was fired with iron sights.

Pict of 6 shots from a T/C Encore pro-hunter 28" barrel in .243 win. Shots taken at 100 yards from bench to confirm zero before sons deer hunt. The target was shot a couple days before the pict was taken my son wanted to keep it after seeing what his rifle could do. So you have the target, the shooter and the result. My so called junk encore does just fine. The target pictured was myself behind the trigger. The boys don't do half bad themselves and have printed some pretty decent groups. Might also add these shots were fired from a Bergerra barrel. Like brother Krocus said they are pretty good tubes.
