Need help finding a .223 Bolt Action (wood stock)

I’m in the market for a new rifle – I’d like a bolt action, wood stocked (Monte Carlo comb) .223 I also prefer nicer wood, rather than the plain jane versions found in some models. I just purchased a Savage Euro Classic in .308 and I love it, so that is my starting point.

Here is what I have so far on my list:

Browning X-Bolt Hunter (Didn’t love the stock or wood + it’s expensive)

CZ 527 Lux (Beautiful rifle – not in love with the magazine design)

Savage 25 Classic (Nice wood – action seems iffy, it is not like my other Savage)

Weatherby Vanguard Sporter (Awesome wood – never had a Howa/Weatherby)

Wildcard – Steyr Ultralight (Waaay more expensive than others – beautiful gun however)


Thoughts/Opinions/Other models? Please be honest!
 
Tikka T3 Hunter is a nice gun,and I've seen some nice wood on most I've seen.They also have a 1-8 twist so you can shoot a wide variety of bullet weights.
The Weatherby is a nice rifle,but check the twist rate.They used to be 1-12,and only shoot lite bullets good.
1-8 or 1-9 is a good twist rate for a 223.
 
Look at the CZ 527 M1 line. I assume you don't like the protruding magazine, and I agree, so CZ made the M1 line for the US market with a flush magazine...no Monte Carlo comb though, but neither does the Lux...the Lux is a hogback drop designed for use with open sights.

You may be able to find a used Remington 700 BDL in .223
 
Good idea with the Tikka - will look into it.

Forgot to mention that I strongly dislike the feel of a straight (American) stock. I prefer even a hogback to it.
 
Mine is an Anschutz 1770 with DJV stock. I love it. I'm now looking to mount a Schmidt and Bender scope to it.

I have a CZ 527 American "Fancy Grade" .223rem.
Beautiful little rifle.

Side note - the magazine works great.
 
I've narrowed it down to:

Savage 10 GXP3 (Package gun, at least it has Monte Carlo comb) $598

Weatherby Vanguard Sporter (much better wood, but $50 more expensive) $643


Thoughts?

My only idea is that I already have a Savage 14 Classic that is similar to the package gun, for ease of use.

not made in .223 anymore. He would have to find a used one.

If I were choosing between the Savage and the Weatherby, I would choose the Weatherby on looks alone.

But the only thing I hunt with .223 is Groundhogs...so I use 55 Grain or smaller bullets.

If you want to use heavier bullets like TXhillbilly was talking about, the Savage has a better twist rate for heavier bullets.

I decided I'm going with the Savage wood package. Wood isn't the greatest, but it feels great in the hand and should be accurate.
 
reloader-1, I know money is tight in this day and age, but I don't think $50.00 would keep me from buying the Weatherby, if that's what you want. Look at it this way: if you keep this rifle for 10-20 years, you won't remember of miss the extra $$. Spread out over the years, we're talking about pennies per month. I don't think you will be disappointed with either rifle, just make sure you get what you really want.
 
If you really want nice wood, you could look around at the custom stock makers and see who has what you want and in what type of action, then try and find a nice barreled action somewhere. It would probably be more expensive, but it would the nicest would you could find.

I hear your voice loud and clear - that is why I am so torn. I don't think I really want the wood package. I like the Weatherby, and I found a Tikka T3 Deluxe
for $700. I might go that route instead.

I really need $4000 or so - that way I could just buy all of the above and be done with it!
 
assuming all other things are equal, spend more for nicer wood.

and at $4k, forget all these guns and get something custom and awesome. :) or at least a blaser.
 
I'd buy the CZ. Magazines are good for a quick reload. I'd buy and carry several of them. The CZ would be a better tactical rifle than the Weatherby - just because you can carry extra loaded mags.

Justin - that's a beautiful rifle (they don't come nicer looking than that), but one ugly coyote - wow!
 
Ended up having Savage Custom Shop make me a Euro Classic in .223

About $990, but I feel its exactly what I wanted, so worth it.

Exactly. That's the most important part.

MSRP on a standard Euro Classic is $909. I'm surprised that the charge for the custom rig was only $80.
 
Savage quoted me $1014 for it - but my FFL dealer gave me a sweetheart deal on it, as I am a substantial part of his business.

I'll post pics when it arrives.
