You are going to get a lot of different answers.

I read they used a M25-5 in 45 long Colt to take advantage of the 5 IN 1 blanks available to the studios. I have also read that some museum has several of the original movie guns on display. 6 1/2" was filmed and 8 3/8" was used for some stills.

And note that in the movie Magnum Force, talking to the young cops at the range, Harry says that he uses a "light special" in his .44. Does that mean he was actually shooting .44 Specials in "the most powerful handgun in the world"?

The winner is the truth. 9mm gave you truth as I understand it. He supposely shot "specials" so that he had better control and quicker followup shots. The revolver he used certainly had some recoil to it. The specials may have been only during the competition with the 357 guys.
