Wondering if a NIB M&P15 VTAC on clearance locally for $1399 is a good enough price & a worthy rifle for my leap into the AR style world?

No.

A BCM or Daniel Defense will be several hundred cheaper and better in almost all ways. A Spike's Tactical will be $500-600 less and be superior in many ways, and as much as you can possibly use at the entry level in every way.

Wow, I'll check Spikes Tactical out. Thanks Z!

I'm definitely an M&P15 fan, but I just don't see spending $1400 for a VTAC. Other than the 1:7 twist barrel; which is not important to me; (I'm not doing 300 yard marksman shooting with 75 grain bullets); there isn't anything on the VTAC that to me is worth $700. The reason I say $700, is because I bought an M&P15 OR (Optical Ready) for $649. Now; no matter how hard I try, it will never cost my $700 to deck out my M&P15OR with all the things I want on it. Sorry, but I looked over all the M&P15's, and the price difference seems to be made up of "Bling".

But if that makes you happy, then go for it. I took my $649 M&P15OR, added a couple hundred dollars for sights/optics/laser, and I'm happy. Then again; even though I am a big S&W M&P15 fan, I am the first to admit, that if I HAD TO BUY an AR (I never would HAVE TO, but if I did), and the M&P15 was not on sale for $649, but at it's normal price of $949-$1000, then I would NOT have bought it. I would have bought a BCM. Personally, I think the S&W is better than the Spikes. I think it's definitely better than the Bush, RR, and many others. But for $1400, I definitely wouldn't get a M&P15 VTAC. Then again, I probably wouldn't spend $1400 on any AR15. I'd rather build it the exact way I want for much less; or do what I did and wait for a great sale on an M&P15 OR whereby I can add all the accessories I want. The way mine is set up, it's still less than $800. (Crappy cell phone picture). But while I LOVE the M&P15, I would never spend that kind of money on one.

For sub 700 the S&W is a great rifle after 700 you get into Spike's territory (7-800) then BCM (9-1050), DD (900 +) and then Colt (1050 +). To be honest I liked the DD VTac better anyways at least their model comes with an Aimpoint.

Agreed; except I'd have to jump right to the $900-$1000 mark. Nothing again Spikes, but as long as I can get an M&P15 for less than $900, I consider it better than a Spikes. Again; nothing wrong with a Spikes; just that in my opinion, it isn't better than the M&P15. Once you have to pay more than $900, then yes, a BCM or Colt would be the way to go.

[/IMG] I had this built by d9 firearms in Kansas city. rock rover two stage trigger, winter trigger guard, badger tac latch, YHM FF tube, Levang comp, SS WOA 16" SDM barrel, ergo grip, leupold mk AR scope, quick detach rings, and I had it built for around 1400 with the optic. shoots half MOA(when I do my part). There are a lot of good parts by many companies. I personally don't like what any one company has in every department. I like a hines 57 best!;)

How much of the $1400 was for the optics?

For around the same money I would take a Spikes Tactical over an M&P any day! M&Ps aren't bad but not up to the level of what you get with Spikes for about the same money!

I believe I had about 250 in the optics, and I wanna say about 400 in the barrel. I had it built a couple years ago, so I'm a little fuzzy on what I paid for everything but I was talking to him this week and he said he could build that gun with a 18" spr WOA for about 1100, but I like the sdm better. my gun is nicely balanced

oh and it's not a rock rover(rock river). My bad:eek:
