Ruger All American what's the word?

My LGS has had several filter down to customers, just none in .308 yet:banghead:. The ones I have spoken to have been very positive about it. One of the regulars, who is a die hard savage fan, said he hopes Ruger keeps coming out with new calibers. Of course, some may just be rubbing it in since they know I ordered the .308.

I want them to invent one in 223.

They're slippery to hold.

The other day I was in my local shop and they had an American and Scout, both in .308.
Both rifles look and feel great.

What would convince me that I need a Scout over an American, being that the Scout is about twice the price of the American?

Do you need higher capacity box mags? A flash hider? An integrated optics rail? If not then the American is just fine. I know it is for me.

I mean Savage (110, 111, 114) is certainly not expensive in the grand scheme of things, but they used to be considerably cheaper than the Remingtons and Winchesters. Which is why the Stevens rifles are being produced. They are the budget minded version of the Savage 110 that they've left alone while upgrading the Savage badged rifles.

As far as the American goes, if they don't come out with a left-handed version then it could be the slickest thing going in the price range, I won't have one.

Waiting for perhaps a 7mm-08 from the American.

Reviews in current issue of Rifle Magazine read make it sound extraordinarily accurate for a bargain price. What else out there in bolt actions fit this bill currently?

Rarely will a gun writer I've a poor review of a firearm. A firearm is something you could own for the rest of you life. Don't let it come down to the cosy being the biggest factor.

First, like Sheepdog said, you'll hardly find a negative review from sources like that because they're getting paid to recommend it. I think it's a fantastic starter rifle, or back-up rifle, or something along those lines; but it isn't as if the Ruger American makes the market standards obsolete or anything. The Winchester 70s, Brownings, Remington 700s, Tikkas, Savages (minus the Axis), etc, are all better products.

Second, the other rifles in it's "price" class (regularly, NIB) include:

Marlin X7
Mossberg 100ATR
Remington 770
Savage Axis
Stevens 300

There may be a few types of rifles no longer in production to get new at that price, but that's generally it. I'm not a fan of the Rem 770, nor am I a fan of the Mossy 100. The other three (and the Ruger) seem better built and have smoother bolts.

Also, I've occasionally seen Rem 700s, Savage 10s/110s/11s/111s, Howas, Weatherby Vanguards, Thompson Ventures, Mossberg 4x4s, and Browning A-bolts USED for about the price as those listed, new.

The .30-06 American I worked with surprised me at how well it shot.
I don't personally like the detachable magazine or the trigger TYPE (the pull was fine, can't tolerate a "Glock-style" trigger on a rifle), but had to admit it shot far better than expected. A major departure for Ruger, the only cast parts in it are the stainless bedding blocks in the stock.

Very light for carry, good recoil pad, smooth bolt.
If I'd had any use for it I would have bought it.

For most deer hunters, the Marlin XL7, Stevens, Savage Axis and Ruger American are all most need. They are all very accurate bolt action rifles. No point in putting all your money in the gun and putting a cheap scope on it that you can't see past 100 yards.

It is better to buy a Marlin or Ruger, put a good scope that costs as much as the gun instead of a Browning or Winchester and put a 100 dollar scope on the gun.

Put a new Redfield 3x9 on the sample I had, shot at or under an inch at 100 yards with more than one load.

From what I've seen and heard, they are a very good value and more accurate than most $350ish rifles. I have a stainless Marlin XS7 in .243 ($372.00 OTD) and it shoots .75" groups with handloads.The Ruger should be comprable. +1 on the need for one in .223 Rem.If I were in the market for a stainless rifle, I'd probably get another Marlin. I don't think you'll go wrong with either.

I have yet to try a Ruger American, but I have owned or at leased tried about every budget rifle out there, for my money Savage/Stevens and Tikka were the best bang for your buck, but both have gone up in price alot lately.

I bought the 30-06 a few months back and love it. The trigger is smooth with a crisp break and the bolt is smoot too.

I have shot 180 grain and 150 grain out of it and both print very well. I like the detach mag, but don't like the price of a second one.

Overall a great rifle. A friend of mine bought my ruger M77 in 30-06 years and years ago and I finally wanted another 30-06 and the american just happened to drop in.

I might buy another in 270 for my 14 year old. He has a Ruger M77 in 243 right now and is a crack shot.

Been shooting a Winchester Mod 70 in 308 w/20" bbl for 26 years. It has killed everything I ever aimed it at. Don't need another bolt gun but if I did, I would consider the American. I liked the one I tried a lot. I like the detachable mag, A LOT!

Great rifle. If you got it in the ballpark of a Ruger American, you did REALLY well.

As for the Ruger, I'm wanting one in .308 myself. I love my Vanguard but it's so freaking heavy. I like the tang safety on the American. My good looking half shoots a M77 tang safety model and I love it.

I'm in the market for a very light '06 bolt gun to hunt with 2x a year. Lugging my 7600 pumps around is getting old. Probably will do the trick for MOA of deer & pig at 300 yards with my old $250 scope.

I just love it when a buddy drops huge bucks on a Tikka or a Cooper with some big 'ole scope that looks like it came off the Star Ship Enterprise, to fill his doe tag at 25 yards from a deer stand. Its all about the bling . . .

Someone on a NC forum showed an add for the american for 299 at there gun shop. Don't need a rifle so i did not read it. But they can be bought at a great price. As others said . Its all many hunters need for alife of hunting. Worth giveing it a goodlook over at this cost. And my lgs will sell it for that too.
