Looking for a 9mm pistol to have as a self defense/plinking gun?

The only 9mm pistol I would even consider for that price range would be a Hi-Point.

There is nothing else made worth buying that would sell for $100-$150, unless it was stolen..

I have never heard of a Jager or Yager? 9mm pistol.

Stay away from Bryco, Jennings, Raven, Phoenix if you stumble upon one. A good knife would be more useful.

Save your money and buy a NEW and inexpensive 9mm from a trusted name. You can get a Smith & Wesson Sigma 9mm for around $300 *NEW*. The Sig Pro can be had for around $370 *NEW*.

Normally, I do not advocate buying used handguns since people tend to sell their problems. But, I make an exception for used LEO Glocks. Great guns can be had for less than $400, many of them as good as new.

The used Hi-Point will be better than anything in your price range. You're pretty much at the bottom of the barrel at that price range.

My advice is to save up a few hundred bucks, then start shopping.

Once you get to $300 you'll find a few decent guns, but you're still not going to find much. But deals are out there if you look.

Don't touch any gun named Jager. If we've never heard of it, it's either junk or super high quality. At $100, well... enough said.

Keep saving up. For $250, you'll have a few decent options. At $350, you'll have several good options. Don't settle!

Not a 9mm para but you might be able to find a used CZ82 in that price range.

I've heard nothing but bad things about Hi-Point pistols and carbines, and the few I've used have lived up to that reputation. If it were me I'd recommend waiting and saving up some more money so you have more options. I saved up $700 before I bought my first pistol, and got a really nice CZ75B new. Trust me, it's worth the wait to get something that you'll still have and love to shoot two, three, or ten years from now. I agree you shouldn't settle, and I also agree most 'good' pistols you'll find for $100-$150 will either be stolen or have some major problem waiting for you when you first shoot it. Jager pistols (at least the ones I've found out there) are all really old and I wouldn't bet my life on something that (no offense) looks like a piece of crap (this applies to Hi-Points as well IMHO). If you can stand the wait you'll end up with something much better, but ultimately it's up to you.

I've shot a Hi-Point carbine and their "compact" 9mm. Both functioned just fine. Most people who own them seem to like them well enough. But let's face it, they're no LesBaers.

Still though I would say to save your money, especially since you plan on using it to plink and getting something more "likeable" ... like an early gen Glock for instance? Or something along those lines.

My Dad had a Hi-Point .380, it was Ok. 95+% reliable, no real problems, it was a $150 gun. Low capacity, very heavy. He sold it for a 9mm Hi-Point pistol... bad move. It would fail to feed or the slide would stick over a third of the rounds we "tried" to fire. Based on that, I would not recommend a Hi-Point pistol. You might get lucky like my Dad's .380. Or you'll get a big heavy lemon.

We have a Ruger P95, $325, fantastic gun . 27 oz, 15 round, SA/DA 9mm. Kel-Tec P32, $225, decent mouse gun, 100% reliable if IMO underpowered. Kel-Tec PF-9, my Dad's new carry gun (he sold his HP 9mm) it's been good as well. Was like $250.

I had the privilege of shooting a Jiminez Arms .380. Fail to something 75% of the time. Recoil so bad my Dad hit himself in the face.

If this is a gun for Home Defense, not carry, maybe look at an H&R or Norinco 12 gauge pump? My H&R is fantastic. I paid less than $150, easy to get for under $200. A lot more power than a handgun, cheaper, and you can shoot a deer with it if you want... But if shotguns aren't your cup of tea, so be it.

My brother had a 9mm Hi-Point Carbine for 7 or 8 months. It was $275, we all really liked it. Zero failures or problems in 500+ rounds. He sold it to help fund his babycakes, his AK-74 Saiga. Now that's a gun...

Oh, you can get good stuff used. Just be careful and make sure you know what to look at (and there are about a million good articles at will inform you in that regard).

Honestly, despite lots of hatred towards them, a good Taurus 99 can usually be found cheap, and they are good pistols. Same with the Ruger p series. A new SR9 is less than 500. Lots of good choices out there

You could start with the Hi Point. The company has a very good reputation for their no BS guarantee. I have a HP carbine, it's reliable. But I would save up another 50-75 dollars and buy one of the surplus CZ82's. Fun to shoot, smaller than the HP, reliable. Mine is accurate with cheap Brown Bear ammo.

If you need service on it CZUSA has an excellent gunsmith dept..

If you want a quality self defense gun ...

You'll have to spend a lot more that $100 .. unless it's stolen.

Skip the handgun for $150 bucks. Wait until you have about $300 and buy a used gun.

For now for home security buy a cheap shotgun.

Get a CZ 75 duty firearm. Great firearm, and not very expensive. $375. to $450. range. It comes in 9mm.

Truth be told, muzzleloading rifles have probably been used more for self defense than all of the handguns combined. The OP should not completely discount his .50 Muzzleloader if he gets in a jam .

In that case get a P95 or a Sigma. I have a 95 with thousands of rounds through it and never an issue of any type. It was a tad over 300 for the stainless. I believe you can get the blued model for under 300 NIB.

The CZ P07 Duty is a good suggestion



It's a wonderful high quality gun IMHO

I just gave my Grandson one for his 1st gun.

He's been shooting the tail off of it & loves it.

Truth be told, muzzleloading rifles have probably been used more for self defense than all of the handguns combined. The OP should not completely discount his .50 Muzzleloader if he gets in a jam .

I don't think this is accurate. Way more handguns at the ready today than all the muzzle loading rifles ever made. The population today (over the era of the muzzle loader) and the proliferation of handguns sees to that. And just being "at the ready" constitutes a form or defense.

You might be able to find a used Ruger P95 for around that price.



There's not bad guns.
Very reliable and very durable.

Or you could save up some more money and get a Ruger SR9, which is a better pistol in my opinion.

Or look at the 3rd Generation S&W 5906 in 9mm



These were used all over the USA as police guns.

CDNN has them in good condition for around $300

They are great guns.

My advice ... buy high quality brand "used" guns ... do not buy junk guns for self defense.

For $100 i would buy ruger if possible as some one stated otherwise for that price i would just go have a nice dinner and forget a out these toys.
