There was just a debate on "what else" , Gun control, and the woman called the mags, "High caliber clips", That has to be the best one yet. I would like to purchase some of those.
Anyway, the seeminglly pro gun guy explained that around 70% of guns are semi auto, which no one there had a clue about. This was Leslie Banfields, show.
They went on to blab about all sorts of misinformation, but all agreed it's getting away from what the plan originally was, and more than likelly, it's going to be limits on amount of rounds in mags, probablly 10. The rest is just nonsense, mental health checkups when buying guns, and things that they won't ever be able to even implament. If they grandfather our guns in, it's going to be ten rounders, that's about all we really will get, "which stinks", and probablly will be overturned. The video game industry has as much if not more cash, than the movie business, no one is going to stick anything on them.
The most important thing is how "Gun appreciation day" goes", if we turn out in numbers everyware, it's going to give them diarrea. they aren't really expecting a big turnout.
If you live in a small town, get your buds, and walk over to city hall, or your range with a sign, "it is a pain in the ass" but we have to show them that there are more of us than they thought, and write your reps, they mentioned that, the emails and letters are working, my 2 cents

I just wish people would call them magazines instead of clips and stop trying to ban things they know nothing about.

What difference does it make if you call th.em magazines or clips? We all new what she was talking about. These increditable anal attitudes are not going to do us any good.

It makes a good bit of difference, yes we know what they are talking about but people like to be in the right when referring to something of import and substance.

Sorry but when people are having a debate over anything correct terminology is very important. As posted by op please write your reps if you have not all ready done so.

When in doubt call them magazine clips...

It makes a big difference considering that some of these yahoos want us thrown in prison over something THEY CAN'T EVEN DESCRIBE. As we see with the AWB, poorly defined terms can get your life destroyed.

I really don't mind people calling magazines clips. That way I can identify the people who don't know what they are talking about.

She said High calibe clips, instead of even High capacity clips, wasn't just the clip/mag thing. They don't know one end from the other. How do you ban something without understanding what you are even banning.
Let them ban High caliber clips, since they don't exhist, how high?

If you're so ignorant of an issue that you can't even manage to get the basic facts correct, then why should you be taken seriously by anyone when you advocate for policy changes that would have a vast and sweeping impact on eighty million people?

I'm sorry, but a basic prerequisite to being able to have an informed opinion on something is to actually do your homework in order to ensure that your opinion isn't one held in error.

I think we should agree with them, and ban all high-caliber clips, like everything over what, 51 caliber? Except for shotguns which should ban everything over 73 caliber? Give or take. Teehee.

magazine, clip, whether we like it or not or disagree with it or not, these terms have become interchangable. Below is the definition if clip from Merriam-Webster's online dictionary. It may be used by the uninformed but it is also commonly used by the gun community (members here), by manufacturers (see picture above), and by retail stores. It has become mainstream and those who get their panties in a bunch over it need to loosen up. If any legislation is proposed it will contain the proper definition and will probably include both words to cover all bases. By current definition, a magazine is a clip and a clip is a magazine and that's the way it is. I don't agree with it but it is such a minor detail in our lives that it has become irrelevent.

Definition of CLIP

1: any of various devices that grip, clasp, or hook

2: a device to hold cartridges for charging the magazines of some rifles; also: a magazine from which ammunition is fed into the chamber of a firearm

3: a piece of jewelry held in position by a clip

The terminology is important, for all the reasons already mentioned above......but what it shows is this is not about public safety.....if it was these legislators would be asking the anti gun lobbyists hard questions on why they want non lethal features banned.....and they are not doing that. To me, it shows this is about disarming the people and the rest is a dog and pony show to make the people feel they really looking out for them.

Btw, thanks for the carolyn mc carthy clip........I bout fell off my couch laughing at her completelack of education on the topic. My money says all anti gun legislators are just like her, and I've seen enough atf agent video I know allot of them have no business in regulating firearms.

Absolutely agree that if you're legislating or advocating change then yeah, know what you're talking about.

But it's a huge peeve of mine that people in gun conversation (oh I'm sorry, Rifle or Pistol or Revolver, since a Gun is a cannon piece, blahda blah) zero in on the misuse of Clip vs Magazine. (mainly because often times it's like the nerdy comic guy from the Simpsons when "gun experts" explain the difference on web posts...)

In this particular case it is about the absolute lack of knowledge about a subject coupled with an absolute opinion on what should be done. The shoulder thing that flips up is classic example of why you don't let people rule over you--eventually, you will get idiots in that position.

I watched an interview with senator Feinstein about two weeks ago and heard her say, "assault magazines". Now I gotta get me some of them. Must be magic and amazing.

It does matter what terminology is used because words matter. It galls me to no end to hear people who consider themselves part of the gun culture to use the term "assault weapon" or "assault rifle" when referring to an AR-15 or an AK47 civilian clone. These are NOT assault rifles. They are semi-automatic rifles and we should be using the correct terms.

Josh Sugarmann got more than he bargained for in 1989 when he coined the "assault weapons" term. He not only got the media to use the term, but he also got gun people to use it as well.

I believe the term "Assault Rifle" was coined around 1943. Ever heard of a Sturmgewehr?

I have to get some of those "Assault Magazines". Do they just jump off the shelf and start beating people up?

Are the ones that jump off the shelf and seriously injure people called "Aggravated Assault Magazines"?

:)

Justin, I have to disagree with you. As a culture, we have the facts on our side, we have the terminology down, gee wiz we can win the debate on points! Except that it's not a debate. We've thought about this fight as a debate for 'way too long, and see where it has gotten us.

So if it's important to you by all means get the terminology right...as someone who has been on the front lines of this fight, who has sat in radio and television studios with people who hate us the way Nazis hated the Jews, who has faced hostile interviews with national publications and who has handled crisis communications for the industry, it doesn't matter.

We're down to numbers now...don't debate...call, write or email your state and federal legislators every single week. When we have to deliver bullet points, they need to be better than "magazines vs. clips." A factoid that I've gotten good mileage with is that based on Feinstein's own press release numbers, since the AWB expired in 2004, approximately 50 people a year have been killed by so-called "assault weapons;" during the same period of time 54 people a year were killed by bees and wasps. So we're going to ban the most popular rifle in America, create a staggering level of bureaucracy and a level of civil disobedience unprecedented in the history of the United States and potentially make hundreds of thousands of our citizens felons to "save" fewer people than are stung to death by bees?

Don't correct our blood enemies; ridicule them for their stupidity.

Michael B

PS: If I'd had my way we would have taken the term "assault weapon," appropriated it, turned it around and used it against our enemies, the same way the gay movement took the pejorative "queer" and used it as a bludgeon.

PPS: Every time I refer to the other side as our "enemies," I get emails patiently explaining to me that they're not really "enemies," but just citizens with differing viewpoints. LOL!

if the word ''magazines'' is too hard for some folks, they could call them ''mags'' for short, and avoid ''clips'' which is already taken for the way I load my SKS.

The more I read, hear and see, the more I am convinved that Obama does not have the votes he needs to do anything. The antis are more vocal because they get in the news more but it seems like the Democrats remember what happened the last time when a lot of them were voted out of jobs for voting for the 1994 ban. They like their jobs. Read between the lines from Biden and Obama and you can see they are not getting the support they thought they had. The only thing I see that has a possibility of getting thru is requiring all sales to go thru an FFL but without "official" registration (even though the 4473 is kept for 20 years). As long as we are not required to list the model and serial# of anything we buy on the 4473 it should not be registered in the main system. (Like the present system). I believe the masses who have purchased guns in the last 4 years all want to keep them (in their uneducated minds) and the support is not there for banning anything.

"Clips" and "ammo" was on a sign above a gun show table today in Germantown/Memphis. They had magazines and ammo.

Lots of good ole' boys who sell them either don't know the difference, or don't want to confuse the public with correct terminology, because many customers identify more easily with the word 'clips'.

By the way, this was about 1:00 and the crowd was only a bit more than what we had two months ago. The line waiting to get in was only five people. Despite the ludicrous prices, the buying Fever has started to Break.

RCmodel's post was the best.

From hence forth the official definition of a barrel shroud shall be;
"That shoulder thing that goes UP.."
