According to the Lee Chart, disk # 57 should dispense 5.2 grains of Unique. is not happening... it;s more like 4.4 grains...Disk 66 dispenses 5.1 grains with a little tap on the measure.

Do any of you have the same experiences?

Unique is a much bulkier powder than power pistol. Their is no way to make a disc that would be accurate with all different powders due to the different densities of the different powders.

Just find the hole that comes closest to what weight you need.

Yes and with different powders. The VMD chart is suggestive and conservative IME and Red dot throws 4.2 Gr from a .66 CC disk. VMD calls for a 5.9 CC

The chart that Lee supplies with the auto disk should be considered a suggested starting point. I find that the listed hole almost always throws lighter than it says. The bigger the flake or stick size of the powder, the bigger the discrepancy. Ball powders like Viht and Win work best for me with the auto disk, but I'm out of both. The micro-adjustable powder bar works well for me with everything but the lightest charges.

Some powders are very close to the chart. Some are so far off it's scary. Unique is not known for it's ease of metering. My jar of Unique (or any powder) will probably meter different than yours. Humidity, lot number, phase of the moon;)

Agreed...

That weight migh vary once you, or if you are using the measure on an automated press, due to the vibrations during the cycle (better filling). It should still be below LEE's data.

I never even bother using the chart anymore. I have found it not even close to accurate. I keep my own notes in a spreadsheet. Here are some I did recently. If you compare them to what you are seeing in the lee chart, the lee chart will almost always (if not always) list a higher charge.

Disk# Grains of Unique
.40 2.8
.43 3.3
.49 3.9
.53 4.1
.57 4.6
.61 4.8
.66 5.3
.71 5.6
.82 6.5

You mean the joke chart they printed up for the lawyers? :D

It's well known that the chart is optimistic. IME up to .6 grains in some powders/charges. Better to load too little powder than too much, said the lawyers.

I like the chart, it gives me a quick reference for a starting point. BUT... some powders tend to be consistently off.

same measure same powder, my numbers are lining up exactly with what schwing gets.

This comes up once a week now doesn't it?
What the heck, I found small primer pocket 45 brass at the range. im pissed. is it trash?
Can I reload nickel cases?
10% off sale at xtreme!
Do I need to clean my primer pockets?
Do you have to tumble brass?
Im too cheap to buy a manual and too lazy to look it up myself. Give me load data!
Do I have to trim my 9mm brass?
I cant find data for plated bullets. HELP
Can I shoot cast bullets in my glock?

Is that enough for ya?

^^^This comes up once a week too:)

Repeating threads are going to happen. We have all asked these questions at some point or other and the search function doesn't always yield good results.

I hate the search function on here but this one is getting beat to death. Looking over the first couple of pages usually shows this topic. Anyhow enough said by me on this one.

area51, keep your questions coming. This is a "Forum", not a research site. There are always someone willing to share their information and experience.

For the record, I refuse to use Unique with my Lee Classic Turret press. The smaller the charge, the further off the throw is. I now use HP-38 and occasionally, Titegroup. They both meter very well. HP-38 works very well for .38 Special, 9mm and .45ACP. HP-38 will also serve for target loads in .357 Magnum.

This phenomenon is not unique (pun intended) to the Lee Auto Disk powder measure. All fixed cavity powder measures rarely hit the mark with their conversion charts and what actually gets thrown.

I have an RCBS Little Dandy powder measure and several MEC shot shell loaders and the charges thrown are always off from the chart.

There are many reasons why this happens.

This is why you need always need a scale when reloading to verify what your powder measure is actually throwing.

It's already been said but I will second it. Somtimes the listed VMD for a powder is close so disk size/VMD = grains is close other times they are way off. I have found Unique is off for me. My results are about like yours. .57 disk = 4.3 grns. Using disk size divided by the listed VMD for unique .1092 shows that .57 disk should be about 5.3 grains but it's not. When I first used Unique I weighed with two different scales and weighed and weighed until I convinced my self .57 = about 4.3 grains. So it seems the VMD of my bottle(s)Unique is about .13.
So with my bottle of Unique
VMD Grains CC (disk size)
0.13 3.1 0.403
0.13 3.3 0.429
0.13 3.7 0.481
0.13 3.8 0.494
0.13 4.1 0.533
0.13 4.4 0.572
0.13 4.7 0.611
0.13 5 0.65
0.13 5.1 0.663
0.13 5.2 0.676
0.13 5.5 0.715
0.13 5.8 0.754
0.13 5.9 0.767
0.13 6 0.78
0.13 6.3 0.819
0.13 6.4 0.832
0.13 6.8 0.884
...
Your mileage may vary
(Universal Clays seems to be right on for the listed VMD but there is none to be found:banghead:)
