Which to buy S&W M&P or Springfield XD?

I might prefer the M&P but I've got enough XD trigger time to attest that they are anything but junk. Preferences aside, it's a well made gun.

The trigger on my Shield is way better than on the compact I had.

M&P would be my pick-"made in the USA"

For the he full size gun I prefer the xd(m). I just shoot them better and they run great and are very accurate. The only little complaint I have with the xd is the triggers. They are mushy or spongy feeling. I've got use to that over time. Ill always have an xd(m) or two around. They feel great in the hand and point naturally for me.
For the smaller guns(shield and xds) I will take the shield all day. My xds(both of them were head aches.)
I would try both out. If you like both then I would go m&p......the m&ps are cheaper than the xdm(s).
The regular xd is in the same price range as the m&p.

The M&P were first built around the .40 cartridge. There have been problems with the 9mm version in the past. I don't know about now.

The XD was first built around the 9mm. I don't know if the .40 version is as reliable and accurate.

Shoot 'em both and buy what you like best. I strongly dislike the checkering on the XD line, enough so that I don't own a single one. I REALLY tried to get to like them, as I like the design, but I couldn't convince myself to buy a gun I'd have to sand down to enjoy. I enjoy shooting my wife's M&P 9c, but I shoot my G26 more accurately and much, much faster.

It's great to have a variety of quality firearms to choose from. In full-sized poly-framed 9mm, the XD, G17/19, Sig SP2022, and M&P 9 are all excellent choices.

I agree with TestPilot, grip safeties are just plain dumb, especially when the XD has a Glock style safe action trigger.

I had a Springfield Armory .40 XDM and it was a fantastic pistol. Sure, it's a pretty large pistol and it's not made for conceal carry but it shoots fantastic. 16+1 in .40 and it shoots just like a Glock 17. Nice. Very nice.

I will not buy a gun that I can't get parts for and Springfield wouldn't even sell me magazine springs for my XDM 9mm. They wanted me to return the whole shebang to them. My one and only XD experience is long past.

why buy magazine springs when I'm guessing it's more cost effective to just buy an entire new magazine? That is probably why Springfield Armory said no thanks to your request.

I went with an XDm .40 because of the way it feels in my hand. It has a low axis too which means better followup shots. I like the safeties. I like the mag capacity too. But mostly I like the grip. Accuracy and reliability are a must of course and mine will do both.

Save another hundred and grab an H&K VP-90. It'll save you money in the long run, because you will eventually buy one anyway.

I don't doubt that a bit. I'm not that familiar with the axis on the S&W so I don't know if it's better than the XDm or not. I just know I like what I have.
