It's a very dumb design to have a rimfire rim activate an indicator that projects outward from the barrel.

I just checked my Star BM and the firing pin does not protude when in battery. I have had mine for over two years, fire it every trip to the range and just love a bargain that works well.
Not all S&W 686's have pinned front sights( my 686 has not but my 617 has). If yours is pinned, switching is relatively easy. If it is not a pinned sight ,changing will require the old sight be milled off and a groove milled to recieve a new partridge type.
