What's the difference??

Neither are based on the old 98 and seem to be short throw push feeds. I know the M12 will have better finish quality.

But engineering wise, what's different? Action? Bolt and lugs? Extractor/ejector? Barrel attachment??

I'm really intrigued by the Sauer 100 and Mauser M18, but wonder if it's even worth looking at the M12 for double the price.

I have the Mauser M12 Extreme Impact 20" fluted. They were blowing them out a few years back at ~$500. It's an amazingly accurate rifle with one of the best triggers out of the box. However, it's not adored by the American market due to having a thermo-fit barrel (think JP Precision approach here). The bottom metal and trigger shoe are metal (aluminum). The M12 has a wing safety similar to a M70 (3 position).

The M18's barrel is threaded into the receiver. The trigger and bottom metal are plastic as is the bolt shroud. The trigger is also nice but when I compared my M12 to a buddy's M18, I perceived some slight creep in his M18. The safety on the M18 is more akin to a M700 but is also 3 position.

Both use the same magazines are able to be top loaded. Feeding and extraction is very positive. I don't think you can go wrong with either. However, at twice the price, I'd stay with the M18.

The top loading is good to know, that's exactly the kind of info I was after, thank you
