On a rock-bottom budget. I think I have narrowed down my search to the Springfield line up, but cant decide wether the larger sights and the larger port on the Mil-spec beats out the GI model. Can anyone commet one way or the other?

These guys will comment on it all day long.

I've been using that forum to gather info on buying my first 1911. I've pretty much settled on a "Loaded" SA, or a TRP if I wait longer.

From what I've read the Mil Spec is worth the difference in price, if just for the ejection port.

Thanks, finally got it to let me log in there.

Yeah the choices are seemingly endless. I just want a bare bones shooter for the occasional trip to the range, so I'm hoping to live without all the extras. Haven't had much luck finding the Mil-spec in the flesh though, it seems all the production is focused on the GI and the new XD's.

For a range gun....I would not get the GI models with the small sights. They are SOOoooo small....really not workable for me. I would gladly pay an extra $100 just for the better sights.

If you want to go even more cost-effective than a Springfield, go with a Rock Island Armory 1911A1 and 500-1000 rounds of WWB for the same price as the Springfield......As my beater 1911, I almost bought a Springfield, but went with the RIA instead. I've been surprisingly pleased with the gun.....and shocked with it's accuracy and reliability....so far......now, I just have to try out the Norinco I picked up for $340 OTD last week. ;)

For an inexpensive 1911 the Norinocs even used are very hard to beat and a platform that you can build on. Here is my A1 after a trip to Dlask.
