The SAIGA-series semi-automatic rifles at the moment are experiencing, what I'd have the audacity to say, the Renaissance. New types of cartridges are immerging in the Russian ammo industry: the large caliber 9.3x64 mm, .30-06 Springfield (7.62x63 mm) are just a few to mention. Along with the well-established calibers .308 Winchester (7.62x51 mm) and .223 Remington (5.56x45 mm), these cartridges expand the variety and choices for both Russian and International gun enthusiasts.

"SAIGA-308", "SAIGA-30" and "SAIGA-9" are designed on the modular principles. The upper part of dust cover, the area above gas engine, the barrel and muzzle now feature modular mount rails. Such features make it possible for the gun owner to select the desired component " a U-notched or dioptric rear sight, a front sight or additional sighting rail, an optical scope, etc. " and place it in the manner one may prefer.

Wicked cool. :)

I'm still waiting for 9x39 to come State side. Talk about a round with some fun potential.

I've said this before and I'll say this again. I honestly think the Russians are the only folks that are really daring to try new things in firearms design.

Sure FN made the FN2000. Sad thing is that the Russians made a forward ejecting bullpup 10 years before. Which lost to the AN-94 which has pulleys, variable rates of fire, and is possibly the most controllable full auto rifle ever.

Cooper talked about Thumper. Check out a Russian Vihkr. Seems to be pretty close to his idea, only 35 caliber instead of 44. However the Vihker, (also Val and Vintorez) will pierce a kevlar helmet out to 400 yards.

The AK 107 and 108 feature a shifted impulse action so that recoil is eliminated. As the bolt travels to the rear, a counter weight is shoved forward, eleminated muzzle climb. As the bolt returns the counter weight returns at the same time. Pretty innovative.

I've got to say that the basic Kalashnikov action is probably the most versatile semi automatic action ever. It is now in use in calibers from 9x17 (Gepard, Klin) to 12 gauge. 5.45 to 9.3x64. That is an amazing range.

Sorry for the drift, I just love this stuff. To my knowledge the 9.3x64 was developed for use in a Dragunov style gun, kind of the big brother equivelent to the 9x39 out of an AK.

SWEET. The Russians do make some cool guns.

I'd sell a kidney for a VEPR in .30-06 or 8mm Mauser, myself. If you're going to have 10 rounds, have 10 BIG ones.

How about a VEPR in .338 Win Mag?

I'd like a nice big semiautomatic thumper carbine, too.

Look at how cheap the Saiga 7.62x39mm is. If not for stupid import laws, those rifles would be coming Stateside with pistol grip stocks and 30 round magazines, and probably wouldn't cost much more.

*sigh*

I think they may be confused. The 9.3 X 64 is a Brenneke round that operates at a fairly strong pressure. The 9.3 X 62 can be chambered in the same rifle as a 30-06 and operates at a similar pressure. It's basically the European version of the .35 Whelen. That would be wicked cool.

so how much is this round? if they market it as much as the 7.62x39mm I'm sure there will be many followers.

Yeah, I'd love one. And a Bizon 2 in 7.62x25: the ideal close-quarters weapon.
Rugged
Compact
SBA piercing
High capacity
AK reliable
Even lightweight, compared to many subguns.

9.3X64 - you are basically talking the 375 H&H. (If true,) Quite impressive for an autoloader!
