I'm wanting to get a carbine for close quarters and I'm debating between 45 acp and 223. I have a 16" AR but want something shorter. I also have a 1911 and looked at the mechtech kits but they are way too much money and I want something with a large capacity. Thought about using a glock and a mechtech kit but I'd have to shell out $400 for the kit and buy another glock. Do they make 30 round glock mags in 45? I'm thinking my best bet would be using a 10" barrel or so in 223 for an AR. I don't want to spend a fortune on this thing. TIA

I saw the MGI display at Knob Creek this weekend and it looks to be a great system. I asked the guy what a complete rifle would cost and he said $1800 and on up from there. It looks to be a great system but I could have 3 different AR's for that price. I'm not a big fan of combo guns anyway. I do like the fact that you can use standard grease gun or ak mags with there system though.

That shoot's the ar carbine idea then. It seems silly that you can get a pistol registered ar lower and put a short barrel on it without a $200 tax but not a rifle.

Get yerself an M1 Carbine! Don't let anyone feed you any "stopping power" BS either...the .30 carbine does bad bad things to a coyote with hollow points.

I use a M1 Carbine for my house gun. It doesn't have the huge fireball and muzzle blast of the .223/5.56 carbines. I am perfectly happy with the carbine that went through 3 major wars. Even the Germans used them in WW II when they could get them. telecaster is right about what a HP or SP bullet can do........ Nasty !!!

If you want something shorter than your 16 inch AR you might consider a Kel Tec PLR-16.
You'll stay with the same .223 ammo and the same magazines and you might find that the PLR is more accurate than your AR (mine are:) ).

I'm a big fan of M1 Carbines but the Carbine is as long or a little longer than your 16 inch AR, unless you get some sort of folding stock.

M1 Cabine

This is my choice for close in work:

1943 Rock Ola M1
Ultimak rail
Bushnell Trophy red dot
Surefire G2 in Viking Tactics offset mount
Remington 110 grain JSPs

Think Israel....

Uzi Carbine. Robust, fast, reliable, compact, relevant, fun and with 9mm GDHP's on deck, devastating. All this in a package that will toss 9mm projectiles into tight groups at 100-yards and even tighter closer in... ;)

And I thought I was the only one use used a M1 Carbine for a house gun.

Sorry to hijack your thread but what rounds do my M1 Carbine brethren use for their rifles? I just use factory ball ammo.

Ymmv, but to me a stock would be well worth the $200, you can't do that with the pistol.

Anyway past that I'd take a rifle round over a pistol round any time I was given the choice.
