Gun murders by firearm type.

The latest '06 numbers are on the FBI site. Unfortunately they are buried in an unlinkable .pdf, so you have to do some searching.

I found the same 1995 stats that you did, as well as a site claiming that Time magazine got hold of an unpublished ATF report in 2000 with the information you're looking for. There may be more recent information, but I didn't come across it in a quick search:

I can't verify its accuracy, but they list, in order:

I've never even heard of "Bryco Arms" before. Who are they?

Its important to note that justifiable homicides by private citizens with a handgun are far more common than with a long gun.
Huh nevermind I can't seem to find the specific firearms list either.

According to this page from US DOJ:

"Since there is no national collection of data about the guns used by criminals, this report provides information from several sources, including the FBI National Crime Information Center's stolen gun file, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms National Tracing Center, the BJS National Crime Victimization Survey, the FBI Uniform Crime Reports, the BJS Survey of Inmates in State Correctional Facilities, other inmate surveys, and special studies of homicides involving guns. The report covers how often guns are used in crime, what categories of firearms are most often used, and what type of guns is preferred by criminals. This is the first of a series of reports on firearms and crime that will be part of a comprehensive report entitled Firearms, Crime, and Criminal Justice. Includes bibliography."

I'd suggest dropping an e-mail to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. It sounds like they intended to release regular reports, but just haven't been doing so. Again, a quick survey of their site doesn't turn up anything especially recent.

EDIT: This text is from a page linking to the 1995 report. It appears that the FBI's UCR gives general types of firearms uses, but it would be interesting to see if nobody anywhere publicly distributes a list of the firearms most often-used in crime.

This isn't what you're looking for, but you might find it interesting. I just finished reading it.

It is a study from St. Louis on types of guns confiscated from gang members. It's kind of annoying in that they throw around "Saturday Night Specials" and "assault weapons" a lot, but you get the point.

I tried looking into this some time ago myself.
I came across something similar to what was posted earlier - that there is no real definitive study or set of statistics kept on the subject. There are some lists floating around, but they're by no means complete or definitive.
There's no requirement, and in some cases no easy mechanism for reporting statistics locally from what i've gathered - so getting concrete numbers is tricky.

By not revealing the facts it leaves us open to speculation, rumor and here-say. It would seem to me that such a list is an absolute necessity for a fact based discussion about such an important issue.

I will spend some time looking and post anything new I might find.

That pie chart reminds me of Craig Ferguson's maps on his Late Show. They always include the place he is talking about surrounded by countries such as "Borat", "Narnia", etc.

coming from the VPC i wouldnt rely too heavily on that pie chart.

those idots probably couldnt tell the diffrence from a glock or a browning anyway...

By mfg is kind of a useless statistic anyways.
