Ok after first range day with the rifle I'm pretty hapy with the 50 yard accuracy (mind you I have shot AR-style sights maybe half a dozen times in the past 10 years) where I was holding 2 inch groups in 5 shot strings consistantly with PMC 55gr FMJ ammo. At 100 yards I managed some bulls eye's but also some definite "my bad" wild shots (more like a 6 inch 100 yard group). Means I need to brush up on THESE kind of sights before engaging hoards of steel targets at range. However, late day 50 yard zombie targets I was getting 5/5 shots in a 2.5 inch bull only using the factory nylon sling.
Has anyone else used a 'cheat' like a piece of friction tape on the stock to make sure you get the same sight picture every time?
100 rounds over and hour and a half, just slow firing (range rules) and 'getting to know' my rifle. No jams, no mis-feeds, no mech. problems of any kind.
Found myself shooting the small apeture sight all day. Colt manual describing zeroing of sights was very wordy, but it didn't take long thanks to R.O. having a front sight tool. Had to dial front sight down, windage was perfect from the factory.
I have a Bushnell Trophy 1x32 MP Red Dot Sight on order, should be here Friday but I might wait to mount it. I'd like to see what this rifle can do with Remington UMC 55 gr (I have a bunch of this), Winchester 55gr soft point and Federal premium 55gr NBT before mounting optics.
Definitely think the red dot style sight (even with no magnification) will help me stay on target (and I read up a lot on this sight here and elsewhere. Price was IN my range (let's face it the rifle wasn't cheap) and reviews were 95% positive. Will follow up.
Need to buy: Brass catcher (chasing brass across concrete is a joy) for range shooting--I do reload. DPMS leather NM sling (It's $15 cheaper than a Turner's), more Colt military or Magpul P-Mag magazines, perhaps a front sight tool. I also noticed I'm not really happy with the way my hand fits the grip, might get a Houge pistol grip instead, or use some grip tape there.
Cleaning was a breeze but I am going to get some of those felt 'stars' for cleaning the locking lug recesses.
