How to make Unique meter properly every time.

Many years ago I worked in a foundry where there were a lot of sand hoppers. To make the sand flow properly we bolted on air operated vibrators. So I had this idea while loading .38's with Unique, which is notorious for not metering well. I merely need a vibrating device, found one and with a little duct tape that Unique metered PERFECT EVERY TIME.

Perfect? Like plus or minus zero?

Or +/- .1 gr like most smaller flake powders that meter well with no vibrations.

Good idea if it shows up as smaller groups. :)

I am wondering ... about attaching something (like a coat hanger wire) to the vibratory tumbler center bolt that holds the lid and attaching the other end to the hopper ...

Sounds like another project testing ... What do you think? :D

I'm using the Lee balance scale and I checked about 10 in a row and then spot checking every 3 or 4 they were all right on the mark. Before the vibrator when I checked them they were all over the place. I used to even tap the hopper with my bullet puller every time I loaded one.

That looks interesting. I almost quit using Unique because charges varied so much, plus it's dirty as all getout. I think I'll give this a try.

I use a LOT of Unique and as long as my charge is larger than about 3.5 grains my RCBS Uniflow works perfectly.

Interestingly though, once I used some IMR 7625 and then went back to Unique and my charges were all over the place. I disassembled the Uniflow and cleaned all of the parts really well and it went back to handling Unique just fine.

How consistent were the drops? Less than .1 gr?

Your signature line put a big smile on my face ... thanks for making my day! :D

Looks like a good idea but before I went to all this trouble I would change powders. Universal clays is right next to unique on the burn chart, meters perfectly, burns clean and doesn't require a devise that looks like it was bought off a late night shopping show!

I got tired of 700X pistol loads fluctuating all over the place (relative to W231) and strapped an aquarium air pump to the Dillon's powder measure. It vibrates enough to settle the powder into the bar consistently and only cost $6.00.

Why not just change powder? I have a LOT of 700X and don't shoot nearly as much with a shotgun as I used to. A keg of powder lasts a lot longer 4 grains at a time than 17.

Even though my RCBS uniflow meters it just fine usually withing .01 grain I still like the idea of adding a vibrator to the hopper to smooth things out.

Don't know how valid a concern this may be but I wonder it could degrade your powder if it was vibrated too long? Could break it down and change the burn speed? I've heard you aren't supposed to tumble loaded rounds.

No.
Powder doesn't break down when you tumble loaded ammo, and it won't break down if you use a little vibrator on your powder measure.

As an aside, there is a tiny vibrator motor & battery inside the Oral-B Pulsar disposable toothbrush.
I think you could cut the handle off one and tape it to a powder measure in about a minute and get good results for the life of the battery.

After that, it would be pretty easy to solder a D-cell battery box on the wire leads and go from there.

A small electric motor with an offset weight is all you need. You could find a suitable motor in any number of junked consumer devices.

THIS IS NOT MY BENCH.
I saw it on another forum and thought it would go good with this thread, just another idea to keep things consistant with powder weights.

LOL...it is now

Stanmo - Hell of a good idea.

RC - My wife bought me one of those tooth brushes. When the bristles wear out, I'm going to experiment. Thanks.
