It sounds like the spring on the slide stop. Or not enough lube on the cam where the slide stop pin goes thru it. If the spring pops out of the little hole in the frame it will push the slide stop out away from the frame and cause it to jam against the frame. And with the mag in it is pushing...

After a closer examination it appears that the previous owner assembled the gun with the slide stop spring not seated correctly and bent it. I compared it to some pictures and I have bent it back to shape. I will order a new one, but it seems to be working fine now. Thanks for the comments.
