    686+ or 627....?!

My initial reaction is that you can't go wrong with either one. I have both a 686+ and the older 627-0. Both will be inherited, not sold. I looked in my safe and and counted up the total N-frames of various calibers (14 - all vintage without locks) and L-frames (2) both .357 (2). Also an...

    800-X pistol loads: .45acp vs .44mag

I just started loading 12.0 gr 800-X in 44 magnum with a 240 gr coated SWC from S&S. This was my idea of a starting load by taking 10% off Hodgdon's max load of 13.4 on their website. Due to the rough metering (varies by 1/2 grain in my Dillon SDB) I decided to weigh each charge and trickle up...

    Substitute For Unique?

I just received 2 5-lb jugs of CSB-1 from Hi-Tech. The label says "flake powder for pistol & shotgun." A data sheet is included with a few loads for 9mm, .357, 40 S&W, .45 ACP and .44 Mag. The data is identical to the Lee 2nd edition loadbook for Universal.

    250 grain RNFP for .45ACP ?

Works fine for revolvers too. Just got back from the range yesterday, shooting my 625 and Smith 1917 with the same S&S 250's in ACP brass over 4.8 gr Promo. Used a Redding Profile Crimp die to add a firm roll crimp. This makes clips mandatory, but the bullets didn't move like they do when use...

    Reloading 308 question

    C. E. Harris has put out an article that says 16 gr of Alliant 2400 would be the universal load for this application, getting somewhere around 1450 fps with decent accuracy. Google it and see what you think. I'm going to try this over the summer but I have not been able to find any 2400 so far...

    Powder Questions

I don't think you will find Unique, HP-38, or W231 for reasonable prices any time soon. There is a sleeper available at some places, IMR SR-4756. It's burn rate is between Unique and Power Pistol. I have used this powder for 45 acp before and it worked as good as anything else. It doesn't...

    Range options around suburban Chicago

I am in DuPage county and cheap, nearby options don't exist. There is another Indiana DNR range called Willow Slough. It's 88 miles from my home, a small facility with 3-4 positions each for shotgun, 50 yd and 100 yd. About a dozen positions for 25 yd pistol. It has been very crowded the...

    10mm 180gr inputs?

Use AA#7 for your 10mm loads as an alternative. Both this and Blue Dot are great 10mm powders. I get best results with 180gr JHP zipping along near maximum. Work up carefully as you would with any other full-strength loads.

blue dot in 45 and 9mm

I have tried a lot of different handgun calibers and loads using Blue Dot, and found it is the best choice in 2 loads only. First, 10.0gr under a 180jhp in 10mm. Full power, with lots of flash, fun to shoot, no pressure signs in my 1006. Second, 15.0gr under a 240jhp in .44 magnum...

    Powders for 10mm

    Need 10mm reloading advice

10.0 gr Blue Dot or 10.5 gr AA#7 under a Remington 180 JHP are the loadings I have settled on. Plenty of power and excellent accuracy in my 1006 and 610. I also have HS6 and Power Pistol on hand that I used for other calibers and I will probably work up some loads with these in the future.

Blue Dot and AA#7 are excellent powders for full charge 10mm. I have a pound of Power Pistol that I will try next.

200 GR LRN -- 45 Colt (not ACP)

You most certainly can use those 200 gr round nose in 45 colt. You will need to decide what type of crimp to use. I stay with the traditional roll crimp even though there probably is not a crimp groove in that type of bullet. I roll the crimp ever so slightly into the bullet at whatever...

Powder for 9mm Montana Gold in Sig229 SAS

My most accurate 9mm loads consist of the Remington 115 gr JHP and strong charges (near the limits of published data) of AA#7, Herco, or W231.

Taurus Raging Bull: Crap or Not?

I have posted this experience elsewhere in this forum: I have a Raging Bull in .45 colt (only), 8 3/8" blue. It is large and very heavy. The grips are comfortable and the backstrap is covered, which causes a rather long reach to the trigger. My hands are average size, so it is no problem. Due...

    ruger GP 100- 3"

I have both the 3" GP100 and 3" 686 plus, which is a 7-shot. The 686 was purchased new (lock and MIM parts), is more accurate from the bench, and has a slightly better trigger. The GP100 was purchased in well-used condition, one of the Canada imports. With full power .357 loads I shoot the...

    Thunder Ranch Range Review

If you go to gunbroker.com and use "44 special" or "41 magnum" as search criteria, there seem to be no shortage of guns, ammunition, bullets, brass for these calibers. While retail store availability of these calibers is limited and expensive (if you can even find them), the handloader...

    Mid Range 357 loads

9.0 gr HS-6, 158gr JHP, standard primer has proven to be the most accurate mid-range 357 load I have assembled so far. Some folks insist that a magnum primer is required when using HS-6, but there is no need to do so.
