Favorite .58 minie ball styles & loadings?

Heading out to the range soon to try to work up a good accurate loading in the 60-75 gn. FFg range. Sound off on your favorites. I'll be using a Brazilian Light Minie Rifle that has a Hoyt reline 3 groove, 32" long, 1:60 twist progressive rifled barrel. I have many minie styles to choose...

    H&G .58 minie ball mold

Just picked it up. Not sure what mold handles will fit--Lyman handles too thick. Looks similar to Lyman 575-213 "Old Style" cavity. Anyone know if this is a .575"? Larger?

    Flintlock ignition

Is your Bess a Pedersoli? Mine is, and I shoot a Lyman .715" round ball with a denim patch lubed with Crisco or Bore Butter, 90 gns. Goex FFg. Pan charged with FFFFg Goex. I had my flash hole drilled & lined with a liner that's hollowed out somewhat on the inside. Also had to heat & bend the...

New CCI musket caps "For Reenactment Use" -??

I just got 3 tins of CCI musket caps and they say "Four Wing" and "For Reenactment Use." I noticed on the reviews section on the Dixie site for CCI musket caps that the older CCI 6 wing caps were supposedly too hot and often fragmented and reenactment groups would not use them anymore for...

Anyone know if a Lyman .58 "Old Style" minie mold . . .

. . . uses the same core pin (the part that makes the hollow base" is the same as the ones used for the "regular" minie ball mold" Reason I ask is because I know from experience that a core pin for the Lyman .58 cal "611" thick skirt mold is a larger diameter and will NOT work with their...

Half cock or hammer down on cap?

Buddy of mine routinely carries his BP arms with hammer down on cap rather than at half-cock while hunting, says that's safer than at half cock, says cap will not go off with hammer on cap even if hammer is struck. I carry at half cock. Hammer down on capped nipple makes me queasy. What...

    Colt Dragoon Model three

Love my 2nd Mod. Dragoon I Lliked the look of the squared trigger guard, otherwise is the same as the 3rd (unless I have them backwards). I had to make a taller front sight as it shot breal high for me. I also filed its tip a little left--now it shoots DEAD ON at 20 yds. I use Hornady .457...

Ever have/seen ignition of BP as it's being dumped in bore?

Basic rule is never charge powder from a flask into a hot bore. Makes me wonder if anyone's ever actually seen BP ignite prematurely, either as it's being dumped into bore or when ball being rammed home. I haven't. Anyone?

    Parker-Hale Musketoon Help!!

I have a musketoon It's a Euroarms Enfield Musketoon, been shooting it for years. I cast my own minie balls with it, .575" Lee and Lyman as well (one of my Lyman molds casts a .577" diameter mini ball, which fits easily in the slightly oversized Euroarms bore). I use 60-65 grains of FFg...

Relining bore of original musket: Opinions please

I have an original Brazilian Light Minie Rifle with a terrible bore. It is evident the rifle has, at some point in its past, been "cleaned up" which included light sanding of the stock and what must have been pretty rigorous cleaning of rust given the fact that the area around the bolster, and...

New Guy here: Walker or Dragoon?

I have Uberti 2nd Model Dragoon I've had the Uberti 1858 (great design, superbly accurate), an 1860 (forgot which Italian make), and a Uberti 1851. My friend has a Uberti Walker. All are great guns. But here's my personal take. I wanted ONE BP revolver. I wanted it to be classic, to...

Any interest in .58 cal. minie balls?

I'm getting ready to cast a bunch of Lyman .58 cal. minie's (mold # 575-213, as well as some "thick skirt" #575-611, & also some .69 round balls for 12 ga. shotgun, all pure lead) and wondering if anyone here needs some. I have no idea if supplies at the usual places people who don't cast buy...

When is a "bad bore" (musket) too bad to shoot?

Good points Hawkeye & Hellgate. As for undersize Minie balls, well, if you saw the bore near the muzzle end especially it is WAY "oversize" because there's so much metal gone from being rusted & pitted away it isn't funny. I am still astounded it shoots as well as it does. As for the...

Cap n Ball revolvers loaded long term....

Loaded Dragoon repro 1.5 years, had misfires. I have a Uberti 2nd model Dragoon repro--great gun, 100% reliable, accurate as heck. I only use black powder, 35 grains FFFg if I remember right, and use Hornady swaged lead .457" balls that shave nice rings off when loading 'em into the cylinders...

When is a "bad bore" (musket) too bad to shoot?

More details and update-- The gun in question is not an Enfield, but very similar. It's called a Brazilian Light Minie Rifle. It seems the best anyone knows, a few thousand (at most; could be as few as a couple of hundred) of these were bought in Belgium by the U.S. government in 1862. It...

When is a "bad bore" (musket) too bad to shoot?

In the context of .58 cal. Civil War era muskets, which are rifled and designed to shoot minie balls, how bad does a bore have to be to 1) shoot so terribly (inaccurate, tumbling) that anything but point blank shooting is a waste of time, and 2) it can actually be unsafe to shoot...
