    Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag

There will be a "MicroGroove" stamp on the barrel. I shoot hardcast in mine. Not optimal, but then I'm "plinking" for the most part. It gets used at ranges where accuracy is not an issue. The new guns are Ballard rifled, and designed to shoot hardcast lead. The Ballard rifling will be featured...

    .45 Levergun

.45 Colt or 45/70 Govt.? There's a huge difference. Before I'd go 45 Colt, unless for Cowboy Action, I'd opt for a 44 Mag -- Marlin. In 45/70 Govt. the way to go is the Marlin, and they make a couple different models. They're made in the USA. I'm not impressed with the Henry. Brass receiver.

What 308 do you guys recommend?

Don't waltz into the Win. Mod. 70 without getting up to speed as regards the various changes over the production years. From 1965 to 1991 Winchester produced a push feed, short extractor, and a pretty funky pressed checkering stock. Then in 1992 Winchester reintroduced the "Classic 70" --...

Winchester Mod. 70, Stainless, New Purchase

Out at the range today, adjusted the trigger down to about 1.5 lb and took out the over-travel. Much tighter groups.

    Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag

For a while Marlin was putting these out with MicroGroove Rifling. Newer ones now have a deeper Ballard rifling. I had one a while back, sold it to buy a kayak. Missed it and recently found another in a pawn shop. Seems like I saw them for sale, new at Wal Mart for about $300. I could be...

    Rem 700p LTR or 700p 26' in .223

Off the bench, varmints or whatever, get the long barrel. More velocity, more stability in the bullet. I can't warm up to .223 Rem. I had a Rem. 700 PSS, rechambered to Ackley Imp. I was getting 0.22x MOA out of it, but it was taking forever to load the ammo for this kind of accuracy. Sold...

How much for trade in value?

Retail shop is going to put 100% markup on anything they buy. That's standard retail markup. So a shop is paying 50% of what you paid retail for your rifles. Now they're used. If they're 95% or better you might get 33% what you paid for them -- if they're in demand. I had one of the first...

    Leupold VX-II vs. VX-3

What are you going to put it on, and what are you going to use it for? I have a Leupold VX III in about 30mm and 1.5x to I think about 6x -- heavy duplex reticle. It's on a Ruger No. 1 in 45/70 Govt. For dense woods and Roosevelt elk. 20 mm objective is pretty "dark" -- I can't see paying a...

Cap & Ball Revolvers, and, California

OK, but a note of caution here -- A cap & ball or any other "antique" firearm is still considered a firearm. You can't carry it concealed; it's subject to the same "possession" laws (carry, transport) as a modern firearm. Also, and this is not "legal" -- casting lead bullets, or fishing...

    Define legal vs. political

Cf: Article I, Bill of Rights -- A concept so important to the exercise of a free democracy that the Founders set it out as the First Right. Indeed the tenor in this forum is so chilling with respect to free expression that I feel compelled to decline bringing this up. Censorship is not...

California Gun Laws are so evil, why?.......

Put your high-cap Glock under your shirt and walk around Los Angeles . . . Then get back to me.

    Define legal vs. political

If you can separate legal from political please tell me how. Politicians, are by definition, those we elect to legislate.

need answers about handgun across state line

My bad. I'm thinking that interstate commerce is the basis of the restriction, "a sale." But that a "gift" is legal. And so that puts me in some deep guano as regards gifts to both my nephew and grand-nephew. I'm going to argue that both firearms were purchased by me in the state my relatives...

New Nominee for Supreme Court Justice - Elena Kagan

Kagan, SCOTUS, Heller, & Stare Decicis One reason SCOTUS has been historically reluctant to issue a decision on RKBA has been because it sets a precedent in stare decisis. Once a decision has been rendered, it becomes the rule of law for the ratio decidendi -- the reason for the decision...

TX - Can a normal restaurant put up a 51% sign just for giggles?

Doesn't matter if the sign is accurate or not. If the OWNER of the restaurant wants to bar concealed carry, the owner has that right. If putting up a sign is his method of making his wishes clear, the owner is under no obligation to provide an accounting to patrons. If, on the other hand...

need answers about handgun across state line

We had a discussion about this the other day at the trap club -- since we're literally sitting on the state line. It is entirely lawful to "bequest" a gun across state lines. It's not a sale, and evidently the legal restriction applies to "interstate commerce." And so, you give the person the...

Harris bipod vs. newer high-end bipods (GGG, Atlas, Bobro etc.)

Just for the record, the previous Rem. 700 PSS (Police Sharp Shooter) I owned had TWO front sling lugs and a Harris bipod. One of the studs had stripped loose. I'm guessing because the bipod provides a fair amount of leverage on the stud. As mentioned above, not the leading edge technology for...

    What scope?

"Tactical, target, and hunting" -- You might fudge on two out of three, but you'd be stretching. Leupold, but what you'd use for tactical and/or target won't be functional for hunting. It will be too large, too heavy and won't provide a sufficient field of view. You opt for "hunting" and you...

NRA members: Should people on the federal terrorist watch list be able to buy a gun?

"Due Process" and legal recourse to challenge/appeal. Lieberman wants to strip "terrorists" of their American citizenship. The legal criteria for that one is the law which strips citizenship to those serving in a foreign armed force. Lieberman wants to apply it to "militant enclaves." Yeah...

    What's your "never buy" gun?

Interesting list -- opinionated as balderscather. How about I just list some "criteria" and you can figure out your own list? Ugly, whatever that means. Cheezy trigger, if it's squishy, made out of plastic and has a funny little "tab" in the center, that's cheeze-whiz. Triggers need to...
