Thinking about an M1A or M14

Several people have suggested a loaded or NM model, I would advise against that for your first M1A. Both of those models have a heavier barrel profile. The standard weight barrel profile on a M-14 balances the best without a doubt. The loaded and NM rifles have their place, but as a fun...

Thinking about an M1A or M14

OP wants cool and CLASSIC!! The AR-10 is not :) Myself and many others appreciate the look and feel M-14 has, it is a beautiful weapon. There are no better factory iron sights in the world..... John Garand got it right! Your right though, the AR-10 is much cheaper platform to get into...

Thinking about an M1A or M14

Springfield rifles are hit and miss. But make up the majority of M14 type rifles out there. This is your best bet for finding a good deal on a used rifle under $1500 Norinco and Polytech rifles can be nice if you replace many of the factory parts, older rifles that have had USGI bolt...

    Accurizing the M1A

OP if you are getting 1- 1.5 MOA out of your M1A leave it alone. If your talking 3 shot groups that doesn't count ;) Before you send your rifle off to someone get yourself a Scott Duff book: http://www.amazon.com/owners-guide-match-conditioning-instructions/dp/188872207X Use the book as a guide...

    16" versus 18" barrel on M1A

This is misleading, a 16" 308 is not nearly in the same category as 7.62x39. With .308 150gr ball you should still be getting around 2600fps, that's not making the most out of the 308 but its definitely not a 7.62x39. OP as far as your question comparing the two, I would get the 18" based on...

Reloading unfired steel cartridges with new bullets?

Ive pulled several hundred steel case 7.62x39. First sorted bullets by weight and then charged them with the same powder they came with.... I took 10 loads and weighed the powder, found the average charge and used that as my load... the powder charge can vary quite a bit in the russian stuff...

    Question about my AR-15's accuracy

I have seen several "floating" standard rear sights, its at least worth checking out if you were using iron sights. If the sights and barrel check out ok and you find nothing loose or broken the next thing I would try is different ammunition.

    Question about my AR-15's accuracy

How were you shooting the rifle? prone, with or without a sling? from a bench? any kind of support?

Different approach for a M1A scope

I appreciate the info about the scopes sitting high, I have not personally handled one of the weaver versions and that is good stuff to know. However I dont think it would be as much of an issue with an ARMS mount since it sits lower than the Bassett mounts. That IOR 6x does seem like a nice...

Different approach for a M1A scope

loadedround, thank you. I already have and use a strap on cheek rest with my Leupold, and I chose the ARMS 22's so i could take my glass off whenever I wanted to still use iron sights. really im just curious what a M1A would look like with a weaver mounted POSP on it. I havent been able to...

Different approach for a M1A scope

Thank you, the THR is a great site. Simple, the BDC in the scope could be used with the right ammunition combination. With time I can develop a load that will follow the BDC. Personally I like the reticle in the POSP scopes, they are simple and effective. And for hunting, I like having a...

Different approach for a M1A scope

For several weeks I have been thinking about putting a 6X POSP with a weaver base on my M1A, I know its pretty unconventional but i think it has potential. The scope would be riding on an A.R.M.S. #18 mount. So everyone out there doesnt hound me for thinking this way ..... I already have...
