I usually carry both. Largely for four-legged control when I'm out with my dogs. But also for those times I'm forced to leave the gun in the car when entering a criminal empowerment zone.

Any decent weapon light provides enough light that you could point it at the wall behind you, or the floor, or the ceiling, or pretty much anywhere else and it'll still provide plenty of light. There's no need to point it directly at anyone. But that seems so self-evident I'm not sure why...
