    Range Report - 1873 Trapdoor

I have always admired the trapdoor designed guns. I would love to move into black powder cartridge guns. Unfortunately, it wouldn't make much sense for me to do so. My local indoor range doesn't allow BP; and the club that runs the outdoor range doesn't allow anything other than muzzle...

    Tricks to removing nipples

One of the best solvents/release agents I have found is called PB Blaster. It can be found in most auto parts stores and the auto section of Walmart. If you are uncomfortable with leaving your entire cylinder submerged in a solvent overnight, there is another way to soak the offending...

    Weighing Lead Balls

Dutch Schoultz has posed an interesting question to me. What is the possibility that my dual cavity Lee mold is casting two balls of different weights owing to manufacturing tolerances? It should be easy enough to check out that possibility the next time I fire up the lead pot.

    Weighing Lead Balls

That's a big if in my situation. I have just started casting. The balls I weighed were .490" and .495". I found weight discrepancies between like sized balls as much as 1.7 grains in some cases. There was absolutely nothing different about the outward appearance of the balls. Had I not...

    Tang Sight for GPR

I don't believe all GPRs came with three holes in the tang. The earlier rifles only had two holes. When I bought my 57GPR sight, the instructions included info on how to drill and tap the center hole if you had an earlier rifle with only two holes.

    Weighing Lead Balls

Upon the recommendation of mykeal, I recently purchased The Dutch Schoultz BP Rifle Accuracy System (http://www.blackpowderrifleaccuracy.com/). Among other things, the System advocates weighing of each lead ball to eliminate inaccuracy (fliers) that would be caused by hidden air bubbles in the...

How often should nipples be removed for cleaning?

I have no idea how often they need to be removed; but I do it each time I clean the weapon. Mainly, I do it because I had a heck of a time initially removing the nipples from one of the guns I purchased. I promised myself that I would never let that happen to any of my guns again. Anti-seize...

    First time BP owner.

Welcome to the forum. I had to chuckle when I read the part about trying to decide between the Remington and the Colt. I did exactly the same thing that you did. I also ordered the Remington first. Then, I had second thoughts and ordered the 1860 Colt the next day. Before I could make up...

My new bang stick, photo album

Great job razorback....even if you do have to stand on the wrong side to shoot it. :D

    A Patch Question

Some of you may have already seen this question on another forum. I'm going to ask it again on this forum in the hopes that someone not on the other forum might have some comments. In a nutshell, the center of my patches appear to be burning thru when firing my Lyman GPR. The patches are...

I just ordered one of these loaders

The holes are 3/8" in diameter; and offer plenty of stability.

I just ordered one of these loaders

You would have to try pretty hard to scratch the cylinder walls when loading balls. The plunger face is convex which centers it on the ball. Since the plunger diameter is less than the ball (and cylinder bore) it never touches the sides of the cylinder bore. I can't speak about the flat...

I just ordered one of these loaders

Spell check can be evil. Just last night I was sending an email; and spell check kept changing "realized" to "realised". I finally noticed that the language option was set to the Queen's English instead of 'murican English.

Is your BLACK POWDER measuring device accurate?

ClemBert, I understand the point you are trying to make; and I see where you are heading with the thread. Unfortunately, I don't think you will ever get there with all the varying opinions being expressed. There are some people who will accept an answer regarding powder charges as gospel...

    BP bug

My first was a Remmy !858, my second was a Colt 1860, my third was a Rogers and Spencer. The first two usually stay at home when I go to the range.

    Gun for muzzle-loader season

I don't hunt anymore; but when I did, I found the difference in accuracy between rifles to be almost negligible...the weight and ease of handling not so much so. Just sayin'.....;)

I just ordered one of these loaders

You're gonna like it. I have the original version that he is now calling The Plainsman. The footprint is a little smallish; but if you mount it to a wooden base and keep the surface between the cam and plunger well lubricated it works fine.

    Rogers & Spencer....'nuff said.

    RAI Loader

I bought the smaller one (Plainsman) when he had them on eBay for $49.95. I mounted mine on a wooden board for stability, added six inches to the charging handle, and used two bulldog clips as a "tool caddy". I also used a cut-down golf grip on the charging handle instead of the original round...
