.22lr is the cheapest by far if you want to spend much time at the range and learn shooting but.. you could also get a little bored with it.
I say try 9mm as its the cheapest next to .22lr but, still is a service caliber.
If you go with .357 be sure and check out the energy levels with different barrel lengths. In a snubby it won't be much more that a 9mm etc. IMO a backwoods .357 needs to have 6 inches of barrel length.
.45 is a great round as well. Both will do you service.
Not too sure as of yet. The largest handgun caliber I've shot was the .44 magnum but that was out of a Desert Eagle, so I am sure the heft of the gun soaked up some of the recoil.
