Start at 9.0 or 10 grains and work up your loads in .3 tenths of a grain increments .. Pay attention to how flat your primers are getting with each load. Also pay attention to how hard the brass sticks in the cylinder when you extract the cases..if your whacking the extractor rod with a piece...

.003 is the ideal gap.. Imo .. You can go as high as about .005.. I wouldnt set the gap any higher than that.. I have a s&w model 29 that had a bc gap of .008 and it was starting to get top strap erosion.. Not a good thing.

Dont underestimate that 3.5 inch barrel for long distance shooting.. Still good for 2-300 yard shots. That gun is a beauty,hang on to it. Those model 27s with the pinned barrel are getting harder to find. Your gun probably just needs a new cylinder hand.

Get ya a savage 110 in 308.. Good round for 600+ yards,accurate as hell, easy to handload for.. And barrel life is outstanding.. If in the future you dont like the 308, just get you an aftermarket heavy varmint 6.5 creedmore barrel and swap the barrels out.. Thats my opinion.

Check the scope for parallax .. It might be a bad scope.. If its a rimfire scope its probably parallax free up to 100 yards or so.. Just might be a cheap scope.
