Wolff Magazine spring too long for LCP

Recently bought 5% extra power magazine spring for a seven round LCP magazine. Original spring measured 4 inches, new spring measures 7 1/4 inches. They both look exactly the same except for the length. After installing the spring it would not hold more than five rounds. Is it possible that wolf...

Double Tap .380 short barrel velocity

Some years ago I chronographed double taps 95 grain 380 loads. I have since lost that data. Do any other 380 shooters have independent velocities for double tap 95 grain cartridges. The Ammo Quest data seems too fast for a short barrel. Thanks in advance.

Effects of fast vs. slow burning powder on recoil

Just a question: If you were to load a cartridge with a fast burning powder like Red Dot or N310 to achieve a bullet exiting the muzzle at 1000 FPS you might have a high pressure cartridge. Now, load the same bullet with a slow burning powder, IMR4427 or H Lill' Gun, at 1000 fps you might have a...

Velocity of Double Tap .380 95 gr controlled expansion from a LCP or any short barrel CCW

I've been going through my old notes and must have lost the chronograph records for Double Tap .380 95 gr. controlled expansion ammo. If I remember right it was rather fas with a lot of recoil for an eleven oz. pistol. Do any LCP shooters here have verified velocities for the cartridge? Any...

Reducing .45/70 loads by 35%. What's the danger?

I'm puzzled when people say not to reduce loads more than 10%,it can be just as dangerous as over- pressure loads. Hodgdon lists max loads for .45/70 lever action rifles 60 gr. of powder under a 300 gr. SJHP, then lists 45 gr. for minimum black powder pressure loads. That is a reduction of 25%...

Using a Harris #4 bipod adapter to stabilize a Mini 30 barrel?

Have any forum members tried to stabilize a Mini 30's barrel with a Harris #4 bipod adapter? If clamped on the barrel and mounted tight to the gas block it would seem it should strengthen 3" of barrel and help prevent barrel flip. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, dang.

Green Dot loads for plated .40 S&W ?

Find myself with about 8# of Alliant green dot powder from trap shooting days. Since Alliant no longer recognizes Green Dot as a pistol powder I'm hoping somebody has some data for plated 155, 165, and 180gr. bullets in .40 S&W for use at the range. I have some idea from old Alliant manuals but...

Ammo and component crunch? Try this...

This going to cause some blowback. If you are loading .38 spl or +P or .357 to be used in a .357 revolvers, Small Rifle Primers work just fine. Load a few up just check to see if your hammer has enough power to strike the primer and set it off. Brisance of a SRP is about the same as a Magnum...

    Brinell hardness of linotype/wheelweight mixture?

Prepping to get into casting bullets. I have two bars of lynotype and a couple of hundred pounds of fluxed wheel weight ingots from years ago when I was making shot on a Littleton shot maker. I'm planning to make a 50/50 mixture. Anybody knowledgable as to the Brinell hardness I can expect...

    Cast bullets create higher pressure?

Just perusing 2005 Alliant Reloading Guide for .357 Mag. cast bullets and found some data I don't understand.(not an uncommon state) They give 7.8 gr. of Unique for 158 gr. JSP @ 1280 FPS, developing 33,200 PSI. The same data states 6.8 gr. of Unique for a 158 gr. cast LSWC @ 1295 FPS but with a...

A striker fired pistol- safe to leave loaded for extended time?

Just received a striker fired 9mm pistol from my family for Christmas. Up to now I have carried a 3" .357 revolver and just placed it in a safe place when at home. Can I do the same with the striker fired pistol, meaning a round in the chamber and cocked for extended periods of time. Not...

Less powder with lighter bullet to prevent over pressure?

While loading some 7.62x39mm with 125gr. FMJ using 30gr. of H335 I noticed Lee's load guide advising not to use that amount of powder with a lighter bullet in order to avoid overpressure. It seems contrary to my experience. I thought a heavier bullet of the same construction requires less...

Bullets labeled .358" 180gr. TC-weigh170, which weight do I load for?

Uncovered a stash of ABC cast bullets from years ago. They are labeled .358" 180gr. TC but weigh 170. gr. Would a high alloy mix account for 10 gr. of weight? Do I load for 180gr. or 170gr.? Planning on using 13 gr. of 2400. Sound right? Thanks in advance, dgang

    Do bottleneck cartridges increase pressure?

Wanted to ask a question that puzzles me. Do bottleneck cartridges increase pressure? I can load 22gr. of H110 under a a110gr. bullet and achieve about 35,000 PSI. However, if I load 22gr. of H322 in a .223 case under a 69gr. bullet I'm loading about 55,000 PSI. Why does a smaller case (.357)...

Light bullets vs. heavy bullets in 2" light weight snub-nose revolver

Trying to develop some SD loads for a light weight .357 snub-nose revolver. True .357 loads are just too brutal to shoot and +P are not powerful enough. Have tried 125 gr. @ 1050-1070 fps and 158 gr.@920 fps. The 125 gr. load developed more energy but less TKO than the 158 gr. load with less ft...

does burn rate of powder effect felt recoil?

A question to those who might know: If I were to load a cartridge with say a 158 gr. .357 dia.bullet with a fast burning powder like Bullseye to produce 1000 fps, would the felt recoil be the same as , less than, or greater than that same cartridge loaded with a slow burning powder like 2400...

using .45 pistol bullets in .45/70 rifle

Recently read of a fellow using .45 pistol dies to neck down .45/70 brass so he could use 230 gr. .452 bullets for a reduced load in his .45/70 rifle. Does anybody have any experience doing this? What kind of powder, amount of powder, expected velocity, accuracy etc. can be expected? Thanks in...

    buffalo bore's .380+ P loading

I carry a Sig 232 (.380) for concealed carry. I know, I can hear it now, if you wanted a 9mm why didn't you by one. I have carried other pistols but the Sig is the one that weighs the least, (16 oz. empty) has a flat profile and with Hogu:confused:e grips fills my hand nicely, and is accurate...

pressure in lead vs jacketed bullets

 I recently started to load again for my .357 and I am confused about listed pressures. For example, using Alliant Unique powder a 158 gr. jacketed bullet can be loaded with 7.8 gr. of powder resulting in a velocity of 1280 fps and 33,200 psi. A lead bullet of the same weight can be...
