Here in Minnesota when the temps drop well below freezing many of us switch to 7 1/2's.
I think a frozen target is a bit harder to knock a chip off than a warm one.

A clean magazine tube and good follower make more of a difference than the shell lifter style.
The stock metal followers in the 500 series Mossbergs have bound up on me making the insertion of another shell in the magazine impossible.

Parts enter stock in batches. Each manufacturer tries to set a part order quantity that will allow them to sell every one before a new order of parts arrive. Sometimes they guess wrong. The Pardner Pump is rock solid. Remington being out of parts happens...
I don't see any need for 3" buck shot loads. I agree with the previous poster who said he prefers the low recoil or Law Enforcement loads.

Very little chance of new barrels.
If it was made in the last 60 years it should be fine to use with modern "game" load type shells.
If in doubt have a gunsmith check it over for you.
