S & W revolver, change finish or not?

Thanks Gents for the responses. Gives more to chew on before making a decision. The gun came with a Hogue rubber grip. My first step will be to change that for some wood factory grips. Then go shoot it and see how much the polish bothers me or not under fire. At this point I'm leaning more to...

S & W revolver, change finish or not?

I recently found a no dash 686 4" with an early serial #. Starts with AAHxxxx. It's a polished finish, not high polished but polished. She's sister to my no dash 6" 686 with the not polished finish, I'd call it matte but I'm not sure that's what S & W calls it. My question is if I have the...

Looks like Paul Harrell is coming to the end of his road...

I've enjoyed and benefitted from watching Paul's channel. I'm just an outside observer to the current situation whatever it may be but I want to be respectful. Thinking of the man, what I know of what he has done and said, the manner in which he chose to do it. Makes me think of a line from a...

    Looking for Training in NM

I've had good experiences, as have several people I know, with Dave Dooley of Zia. I'm not associated with Dave/Zia in any way other than as someone who has taken a class with him. Worth talking to IMO. http://www.ziafirearmstraining.com

Wow talk about disappointed with my power of observation. I thought all/most SMLEs were marked SMLE. Looking at a bunch of pics the only rifles I see marked that way are Australian Lithgows. All others are marked Sht LE as lysanderxiii noted. Guess I'd better pay better attention...

Tark- So looking back at your pics, your rifle is a "Sht LE" so technically is it not an SMLE? Not a big deal, like I said earlier it's a nice rifle. I'm just trying to learn more about these guns. I'll be watching for a Sht LE or an SMLE for myself someday.

Yes I mis-spoke in my earlier post... Rifle, SMLE - Mk I*** was converted from - SMLE Mks I*, Mk I** upgraded to: Mk VII ammunition sighting Taken from SMALL ARMS IDENTIFICATION SERIES, Ian Skennerton So my impression was the rifle went thru an upgrade(s) to its current designation. I was...

tark- This link may help you a little. Are there markings on the other side of the receiver? That area often is stamped with information. I think your rifle is export stamped and stamped to show modification from a No 1 to Mk 3. But I am definitely no expert... These links may help, they're...

I'm a fan of these old warhorses. Currently have a No. 4 Mk 1/2. Fun, fun, fun. Even with open sights makes me look like a decent shot. I shot a sporterized version as a kid that was my father's. I miss that gun. Buddy has an SMLE that we took to the range earlier this year and when I shot it we...

    Ruger minis

IWAC- Sounds like we are in similar situations. In a nutshell what seems to be frequently described to help accuracy are shortening the barrel to @ 16", adding a weight to the barrel (even just a muzzle device of some type), and a device like the Accu-strut. I'm still reading and asking...

    accu-strut on mini 14

Thanks for the replies and links. Sounds like this will be a fun rifle to shoot and modify. The barrel shortening sounds interesting.

Pietta 1858 Remington .36 caliber accuracy

Nice! Scored a Pietta .36 recently and have yet to shoot it. Out of curiosity how does the .36 compare to the "power" of a modern caliber? Similar to a .32 or a .38 or anything?

    accu-strut on mini 14

Have acquired a 181 series mini with the 9/16" barrel. Have only shot it once at an indoor 25 yd range. Does anyone have opinions regarding the 6" accu-strut? Beneficial or a waste of money? I'm not looking to try to make the mini something it isn't but would like to have a rifle capable of...

    PSA 5.56 AR review

Not an operator just a shooter... Just put together a PSA midlength rifle. $130 complete lower receiver, $280 complete middy upper, $50 Magpull rear sight, $100 PSA bolt, less shipping and FFL charge $560. 1 range trip so far shooting Privi 55gr ammo. Very pleased with apparent quality and...
