    Bolt Action .223

Don't overlook Swift scopes. My extended family has a half-dozen of the 6X18 and we really like them. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=338444 I've got one on my .223. I let a buddy shoot it several weeks ago and he had never heard of the brand, thought it was a $1000.00...

    Best Caliber That Never Took-off

The .260 Rem is a great cartridge, but it's literally bracketed by the .243 Win and the 7mm-08, both also great cartridges. My sis-in-law shoots one for deer and the two deer she shot last year were DRT. Of course, she shoots them in the neck 'cause she doesn't like to track them.

    help!!! howa 1500

The only experience I have with Howa rifles is one I bought last year as a gift. I found a used Howa 1500 in 270Win in a pawn shop rack at a really interesting price and picked it up for a nephew. I took that rifle to a range that weekend and sat down at the bench with it. First three rounds...

New Model 870 Police in July 2010 - blued finish/walnut stocks - sweet!

Mine's an express, smooth bore barrel with rifle sights. Wood stock, whatever crappy finish they put on express shotguns. It's served me well for over a decade. I bought it used ($150), gave it a good cleaning and put it in the patrol car. I take it out and shoot skeet with it occasionally...

    Results in--2" barrel .38 Special velocity...Ported VS. Non-ported barrel

I'm glad to see you posted the numbers. I've been looking for them. For the record, guys, the Chrony was mine and I did the shooting while Southern Shooter watched the chrony and ran the numbers. I didn't feel any discernable difference in the recoil of the two revolvers, but I might have been...

    243winchester recoil

C'mon guys. Some folks are sensitive to recoil, and I know that my .243 has measurable recoil. Not like a 12 ga slug gun, or a .45-70 with stout loads, but yeah, the .243 recoils. A dozen rounds with my .45-70 and I'm liable to call it quits. 50 rounds with the .243 and I'm still good to go...

    .30-30 powders

The only powder I've ever used for jacketed bullet loads in the .30-30 is IMR3031. 30 grains of 3031 duplicates the factory load with 170 grain bullets. I use IMR4895 for reduced loads with cast 311041 bullets. 27.5 grains gives me 1800 fps with a bullet I make in the garage. However...

    Charles Daly Precussion Rifles

Thanks, Mr. Kassnar, for replying regarding the Little Sharps in .30-30. I've long thought that a small frame Sharps in some smaller calibers would be a great seller and I'm happy that KBI and Charles Daly are stepping up to the plate. I'm saving my pennies for the .30-30 chambering already...

    State Scorecards

Reading from the bottom up, Louisiana is tied for third with a score of 4. I love it. Louisiana is a mecca for shooters, hunters, sportsmen. Our license plates long proclaimed us the "Sportsman's Paradise". Long may it be so.

    LEO perspectives

Let me log on as a 25 year veteran of police work. In my time I've seen a lot of things that I don't discuss around the house. In my entire time as a police officer I have never felt threatened by a law-abiding citizen carrying a weapon. One of the things I've noticed over the years, watching...

You're Going on a Cape Buffalo Hunt...What Rifle Do You Want?

Yeah, from my time reading Africa books, I seem to recall that the .375 H&H was recommended as a minimum rifle, but more than that, it was recommended as the rifle that would reliably do the job if you could only take one rifle. Those same guys would recommend a two rifle battery of .375 H&H...

    Father to Son transfer.

The last time I gave a gun to my son, I said "Here ya go!" He said "Thanks, Pop!" and put it in the trunk of his car. We didn't even consider going to an FFL. None of his damned business.

Would a .44 mag travel 300 yards and kill?

+1 what Cosmoline said. It's amazing how far a hard cast bullet out of a .357 or .44 Magnum will penetrate.

    Peculiarities in Gun Taste?

I like stainless side arms I like blue or parkerized rifles. I shot competition skeet for many years, but lately you'll find me on the rifle line. The only shotguns I own are pumps. Because I carried an M16 for so many years, I consider it a tool, not a rifle. I own one, but don't feel any...

Is the Submachine Gun Still Relevant for Military Use?

As I recall, qualifying with an M3A1 on a pistol range was quite a hoot. All the tankers were out there spraying bullets merrily about the countryside. It was an interesting afternoon. I actually destroyed an M3A1 back in the late '70s by running over it with a tank. When faced with all...

    Tell me about the 308

It's my experience that the .308 is good for a lot of things, but not particularly the best for any of them. Guys who like them, like them a lot. The recoil isn't overly punishing. Every one I've ever shot has been reasonably accurate. I think it's a better balanced cartridge than the...

    rifle trajectory question

Good question, but without the BC of the bullet, I can't let my ballistics computer work. However, for all practical purposes the boiler room of a coyote is about 4" by 6". At 50 yards that bullet is probably going to be within a half-inch of your aiming point. Think of it like this...

    Colt Series 70 - Rescued

Well done, sir. Even with all the Kimber's, Wilson's and Ed Brown's out there, there's just something about an old Colt. It's a beautiful pistol.
