Take the lock out of the gun and see if the spring is making a rub mark on the wood hence slowing the strike of the hammer. 9 out of 10 time this is the problem. Add a shim of anything under the lock and don't over-tighten the screws.

YOu can use the wood block method and grind away just fine. You can also look online for black powder separating screens to then sort your grades. I'd bought one years ago that was a lil round drum with screens from 1 to 4F you could change out. You start with the 4F then more up to 3 then 2F...
