I can't tell you about the best for plinking/target shooting but I went to a ballistics workshop two weeks ago and the best round going out of the .40S&Ws shot was the Federal HST 165 and 180 grain. These were shot next to Speer Gold Dot Lawman and the older (non bonded) Remington Golden Saber...
If you think that the finish looks bad on your 642 with two years of carry milage on it you should see my 342 also. Six years with that in my pocket has been real hard on the finish.
I have contemplated (I even called S&W's custom shop) refinishing it but I figure that the new finish would...
.40 S&W if you are purchasing the gun for self defence. If you are buying a gun to target shoot or plink then by all means go with the 9mm or the .380.

I don't belive they are for sale but they are cool. Nice to dig out and shoot once and a while. My department bought them probally 25-30 years ago. The were purchased through a government program and they are in good shape.

At the department where I work we have Bushmaster AR-15s that a nicely tricked out. The Tach team uses Remington 700s on the perimeter team. The Entry team uses Bushmaster AR-15s and H&K MP 40s.

I ordered my tube from Brownells. The one that I had installed was a "Breako" brand made to work with rifles. The Brownells part number is - 352-205-000. I think it was...
Here is a picture of my Marlin. It's a little tricker than it first appears. I refinished the stock and forend with an oil finish. There is a mercury recoil tube in the stock and a Limbsaver recoil pad. I replaced the sights with a XS ghost ring rear and post up front. There are a couple of WWG...
