Any suggestions on a good quality 1-4 or even a 2-6 power scope for an AR? I’ve seen several that looked like what I want, but they cost a ton considering what they are. Nightforce and Leupold both make something like I’m looking for with some type of ballistic reticle useful for ranging, but the cost is pretty close to a LR rifle scope! Is there something out there similar to a "Nightforce 1-4x24 w/Zerostop - Mildot Reticle" that can be had for around $500 or less?
Thanks!

Im running nikons .223 1-4x20 on my Mini. Its reticle isnt the easiest to use for ranging, but its functional for hold over.

If you want to go 1-4 power check out the Vortex Viper PST. If you go down the 2-7 road, check out the Vortex Viper. I have four 2-7 scopes of various rifles and find it to be a sweet spot for in the magnification range. You can shoot with both eyes open (with some practice!) up close on 2x and then dial it up to 7x and easily shoot for groups at 300.

I have a CMR on my AK, and I think its fantastic. My dad likes it too and he's a bit of a glass snob; he primarily uses higher end Leupolds on his rifles. The reticule is fine IMO, plenty accurate and great for shooting steel targets or hunting and great for bullet drop. The glass is fantastic, the scope is very rugged, and I believe it comes with a lifetime warranty. Plus the illumination is great!

SWFA has it with a Burris PEPR 30mm mount for $350-probably the best deal around.

Check out the Millet DMS. It has a dot-in donut reticle that is fairly decent. A much better optic than the price suggests.

I second the Vortex Viper PST recommendation. A good scope, equipped with good features, for a fair price, from a company that will stand behind their products...what more could one ask for?

:)

The Burris Fullfield Tac30 1-4x24 runs $299 or so and is excellent glass for the price, with illumination and a holdover type reticle.

Remember that a ballistic (I'm thinkin' your stabbing at a BDC) reticle and a ranging reticle are two different things and the BDC is relative to a particular barrel (twist + length) and a particular cartridge.
Also, when you say 1-4 power, are you looking for a 1,2,3 or4 power or a 1-4 variable. Once you define these two parameters (reticle and power requirements) your options will slim some and help your decision.

That be true! Looking for a reticle capable of ranging (really want mil ranging and mil adjustments, but could live w/ moa adjustments). Really want mils marked on the windage, but I could probably mentally bracket without it if it saved me $1K. Variable magnification from 1x (+0) to +/- 4x power.

meopta was really popular with the 3gun crowd for a while, for the money.

do NOT waste your $ on the NF 1-4

Redfield made by Leopold has a pair of 2-7, 2 different reticle scopes.

Not really...a BDC is any reticle that compensates for drop...very, very few people have a reticle made specifically for their particular load. You simply need to run the numbers to find the ranges that each stadia represents (the Zeiss Rapid-Z has software that will calculate this for you). I think you're confusing BDC adjustment knobs (which are tailored for a particular cartridge and sometimes load) with reticles.

I believe you just described the PST, which is available in Mil/Mil (or MOA/MOA for those that prefer it), and has a pretty nifty BDC reticle that is just about ideal for close engagement distances as well as moderate-long.

Why has your crowd ditched the NF 1-4x?

dunno about anyone else, but i consider it the worst glass i've ever owned. fish eye distortion was so bad i sent it back. they returned it after 4 weeks and told me "that's how it's supposed to be".

Nope - No confusion at all. Bullet Drop Compensation is for A round from A barrel. Otherwise - we're simply talking stadia lines.

Tell that to Nikon, Minox, Vortex, and scores of other scope manufacturers that use the terminology for their reticles...which all compensate for bullet drop. Of course, they just make 'em...what do they know about sports optics and reticle utilization?

:)

Right, they make them and further and more importantly - the sell them. Doesn't make it correct.

Let's just start accepting all these weirdo interpretations of either the USMC or the U.S. Army's "Mil-Dot" as well - hell, if a manufacturer sells it it must be correct.
