Ok, my 21yo nephew and his adorable girlfriend finished the college year up at their school in NJ and decided to come visit his favorite aunt and boorish uncle in Atlanta for a few days.

So we showed them the two highlights of Atlanta, turned him loose on Athens (where he should have gone to school the heathen) and let them sleep late and chill. I still remember being a college student and gratefully accepted all lazy time granted me.

Well, I decided to take him and his girl to the range last night. I little background, my nephew is a recovering thug wannabe and did not and does not live in the best of areas in Southern NJ across the river from Philly. Many of his "friends" are doing time or are on their way to doing time. He has been around handguns, never fired one yet seen many used in not so desirable ways. His girl is scared stiff about guns, yet after some proding that I would enjoy her company and that I thought all women needed to know to shoot, tagged along.

I brought the P22, P99 and rented a Glock 19 to compare the P99 with. Well, his girl got nervous in the range and thought it might be better if she watched through the window from the store. I started him with the 4 rules with a "this stuff is serious" attitude .. I told him any gangster aiming would get him shutdown for good. He did ok with the p22, stating that it recoiled alot more then he expected. At first he was reluctant to shoot a .22 and I could tell he wanted a mans round to shoot ... but I told him I wanted to have him work up to the 9mm to improve his accuracy and work on his expectations. He would shoot the first three round great, right on, but then his next 7 would scatter, slowly going up the paper as he tried to control recoil with to much strength. We worked on his accepting the recoil and rolling his wrists. We then got him shooting the p99 wich he had the same results as with the p22, just with a larger grin on his face. But, to my chagrin, he loved shooting the glock19, it must have just fit his hand well, he is a smaller guy, yet stong and muscular with larger hands. He was right on with the g19 and said he felt more comfortable with it. .... Oh well, I was hoping he would fall in love with a Hipower or some other beauty so I would have to "acquire" one for his usage when he comes to visit again. Plus his younger brother is due to come see us, and he would want to shoot the same thing his older brother enjoyed so much. Oh well, a G19 isnt so bad.

To go back to his girl, I looked for her a couple of time and she would be sitting there watching, interested, yet wandering. One of the range guys gave her some binoluars to watch the targets closer to see how we were shooting. Then I turned around and she was gone from the window. We took a break and walked out into the store. Well, there was an IDPA shoot going on and during one of their breaks, the three women shooters had grabbed her and were talking her up and having the salesman show her guns ... she liked the CZ Rami ... She still did not want to shoot right then, but getting her to even hold numerous guns and try them for size was a victory.

when we got home, my wife was asking her about the range and she says she want to go again tonight, "I might be ready to try ... I want to ask my dad if it is ok first. See, he has been trying to get me to learn to shoot for years, and I want to make sure he would be ok with me going to learn to shoot without him."

I told you she was addorable. I cant wait till tonight. I am going to try my nephew with a hipower and sig just in case.

Way to go, axeman_g!:) She definitely sounds like a keeper! I liked your comment about 'gangsta' aiming, and I'm glad he is enjoying shooting, and ready for more! New shooters seem to like the Glock, for a while, till they try a Hi-Power, or Sig, or HK!:D JK! I'm definitely not a new shooter, and I still like Glocks! Just shot my Dad's .45GAP the other day. Nice!;)
Keep up the good work with the niece-to-be, and the younger nephew!:)
