The thumb safety on my 1911 GI has a fairly deep mark where the plunger catch impacts it. Its like a divot caused by wear. Is this normal after prolonged use.

There's supposed to be a positive "snick" as the safety moves down into position. The divot holds the plunger safety pin there, positively capturing it there. I've seen some that are "more positive" than others.

But the real question is - how well does it work?

As stated, the detent is there to prevent unwanted movement when firing, handling, etc. It is subject to tuning, with care. Sometimes the detent is deepened to hold better. Some can be loosened by polishing the tip of the plunger pin and the surface it rides on (front edge of the thumb safety). The bottom edge of the dimple can be tapered downward with a jewelers file to loosen the hold. A drop of oil can't hurt either.
Check that the plunger tube has not worked loose before having any tuning done.

The recess is normal, but that deep horizontal cut is not. It looks like the plunger has a sharp point that is gouging the safety. The plunger spring could also be too strong.

Yup. Sometimes the plunger is manufactured with a "pointy" tip. It should be a ball tip. You could remove it and reshape and polish it. The "stiff" part in the movement is usually the result of the "bump" underneath the detent. You need enough to hold the safety in position but too much will cause felt resistance.

I am not seeing a problem.
Either the safety had the horzontal cut made at the factory, or somebody added it later.

It's purpose is to keep the safety from getting bumped on safe during firing.

It most definately is not from the plunger wearing on it.

Usually it is done to the slide stop & safety with just a demple from a drill or carbide bur.
They even make a special drill to do it.

If it is really really hard to operate, polish it slightly with a Dremel & Cratex rubber bullet tip.

But I would put a dab of grease on it and Fogadaboutit!
As Martha would say, It's a good thing!
