Gentlemen,
This posting is again for the new guys. As you can see the 1920 rifle by Mr. Garand failed because of the weight. (The limit was 10,000 pounds and as you can see he missed the mark by 104 pounds) Yes, it is a typing error so that we get that out of the way. The next photo is of Mr Garand's rifle setup for 1925. This should show you that Mr Garand was a man way ahead of his time. Just take a minute and think about what you are looking at.

Again Guys drop a reply or add info if you have it. All I am trying to do is get data out to you. These files were very hard to get off the micro film files.
I hope some of you find this type of data of some interest.

All he needed to do would have been to remove just a bit of material, metal or wood, from somewhere on that..and we might've had the M14 thirty years sooner. What a shame...

no wed have a M1 (30-06)with magazine capatability with the BAR. now THATS a fierce team!

That looks to be one of the early primer actuated rifles. When ordnance specified crimped primers, this design was dead.

Hatcher said the primer actuated Garand was obsoleted by progressive IMR powder that did not kick the primer back as sharply as the old Pyro DG.
Maybe Clancy has the straight scoop.

I still thought it a neat design. There was a primer actuated gun somewhere that used special brass with a thick head and very deep primer pocket so the primer would really act as a piston with appreciable travel distance.

Yep, earlier Garand design. Unfortunately but the specs for the Garand called for clip fed instead of magazine fed. I always wanted to build a BAR fed magazine Garand.

Garand did develop one, but because the Army specified selective fire, it was unsuccessful. The bolt was too light and feeding wasn't reliable in full auto. The solution was either to modify the receiver to give the bolt longer travel (and thus travel time) or to slow down the unlocking (which Remington's engineers figured out).
