My neighbor told me that he was looking for a .22 caliber 1911 pistol. Other than "conversion kits" for normal 1911's (like Kimber), are there any 1911's made in .22?

Kimber now sells a complete pistol in .22 caliber. Completely engineered for the .22 round, it's a bit more than just a .45 frame with a conversion slide and barrel.

It got rave write-ups when it was introduced last year ... but what new gun doesn't?

That's the only one I'm aware of.

The Marvel conversion kit gives you a gun that is among the most accurate available. (If I remember correctly, a half-inch groups at 50 yards is what they promise.)

Everyone I've ever talked with that has had experience with the Marvel unit raves about them. Get a cheap (but solid) 1911 and add the Marvel top end. (There was a solid 1911 for sale in the classified area for around $300 earlier today.)

Marvel lives up to its name but

What do you want a 1911 in .22 for and how much of a 1911 do you expect it to be?

Marvel is a great product but it begins to drift away from being a 1911 toward being a target gun - of course if you want to match a red dot sighted race gun then Marvel is the only way to go.

If you want to match the 1911 manual of arms then Marvel doesn't lock the slide back after the last round - aluminum slide. Similarly the Kimber - which I would buy in .17 - has been aluminum pretty much through and through - watch the market that may change or already have changed.

I have 2 Service Ace conversions to give me a true 1911 in .22 but I wouldn't try to compete against a Marvel for paper targets.
