I did a few different 22 rimfire chronograph checks through my Marlin M60 stainless SB rifle. There were no attempts to check group size, just velocity on my ProChrono digital @ 10ft.

1-Aguila Super Max 30gr. 5 shots advertised Vel.=1750 fps

1563, 1550, 1455, 1483, 1433 Average-1496 fps

2-PMC Zapper solid 40gr 5 shots Adv Vel.=1255 fps

1106, 1118, 1092, 1138, 1121, Average-1115 fps

3-CCI Mini Mag 40gr 4 shots Adv Vel. =1255 fps

1247, 1211, 1206, 1232 Average-1224

4-Rem Subsonic 38gr 5 shots Adv Vel.=1049

991, 979, 1043, 984, 1059 Average-1011 fps

5-Federal Gameshok 40gr 5 shots Adv Vel=1240 fps

1180, 1160, 1174, 1160, 1225 Average-1179

6-Winchester T22 target 5 shots Adv Vel=1150

1160, 1138, 1132, 1135, 1149 Average-1142

7-Remington Target 40gr 5shots Adv Vel=1150 fps

1085, 981, 1099, 1060, 1101 Average-1065 fps

8-PMC Zapper HP 5 shots Adv Vel=1280 fps

1273, 1194, 1282, 1223, 1282 Average-1250 fps

I had 2 rounds of CCI Velocitor with Adv Vel of 1435 fps and they measured 1336, and 1380 and were a bit louder and had a bit more recoil than any other rounds that I tried.

Here are the results with standard deviations:

1 1496.8 ± 57.5
2 1115 ± 17.2
3 1224 ± 19.0
4 1011.2 ± 37.0
5 1179.8 ± 26.7
6 1142.8 ± 11.6
7 1065.2 ± 49.8
8 1250.8 ± 40.1

So yes, the T22s are the most consistent, as well as being the closest to the advertised velocity, at least in his rifle.

Whaa-a-t?

You mean to tell me that you didn't have a 30" match chambered pressure barrel in you gun safe? Shhee-e:rolleyes: How are you going to kill a squirrel if the bullets rattle out of the barrel like that?

Just pulling your chain, Mort. I haven't seen a 60 that didn't shoot well. This goes to show you what happens to factory velocities when fired out of a REAL gun. I have yet to chrono factory ammo that was within 100 fps of published speeds. But then I'm talking about certerfire stuff.. Haven't tried it with 22, yet.;)

Thanks, this is very interesting.

Always interesting to see information like this. Thanks for posting.

I suppose that five shots is not a large enough sample to be considered statistically significant (I would guess that you would need at least 25 or 30 shots for that). Would you expect a direct relationship between consistent velocity and group size?

I was just being lazy not posting the SD variations, thanks MortalWombat. It took me a half hour to type what I did.

I have a Marlin youth M101 single shot T-bolt, that shoots the T22 Win extremely well. For being a fairly cheap rifle, that little single shot is amazing with a scope and the T22 ammo. That T22 ammo is close to 20 years old.
In my 541-T Remington, the T22 Win is fairly accurate, but that rifle shoots PMC Moderator the best.
The M60 is not quite as accurate as the other two, but seems to shoot everything decently and is 100% reliable with full power long rifle ammo.

I still have a bunch of different 22 ammo that I haven't chronographed, and I hope to get to it eventually.

Klinea its not the number of shots its the sample. 5 shots selected from 5 different loys and fired through 5 popular rifle brands would be a good sample. Just firing 30 rounds out of a single gun from a single lot woild still not be representative.
