I really want a 22 Hornet but have to wonder if I can't do everything I want with a .22 Mag. I am a reloader and that is a plus for the hornet, but I am not sure how much benefit I would get from the Hornet vs just buying a box of .22 Mag.

The gun would be a truck gun used to snip at small varmints or crows out to about 150 yards.

In the hornet I would go with an older Sako or Winchester bolt action, or maybe a Ruger No. 1.

In the .22 Mag I like the Winchester 9422 XTR.

Anyway any thoughts from the gallery.

I spend enough time reloading other calibers and I do have experiance with the hornet it can be a PITA to reload.so I have a couple 22 mags for that and the next step is 223.

you can't make a "mouse-fart" load with a 22 mag.

22 Hornet is just an all around nice little rifle to have.

Matter of fact, I do believe I have caused a few converts this last weekend. They all had fun using my Winchester Model 43 22 Hornet as an ignition device for Tannerite charges.

Mind you the ammo is pricey...BUT, if you hand-load then you will be pleased as most loads average around 10 grains. 1 pound of powder is 7000 grains. Nice math there. Some say that you will have a hard time keeping cases in good shape...just be careful with the lube, and use a good quality sizer, preferably a neck sizer. Mebbe a lyman M-die to make sure you don't wrinkle the case neck. All I am trying to say is that as long as you take your time, you won't have to worry about loosing half your cases and you will have a rifle that will make you look damn good at the range. MOST important thing...this round isn't a hot-rod. You keep the velocity around 2400 fps and the cases will last and the rifle will be consistent.

If you like reloading the hornet, then so be it. It is a little tedious for me. I am a big fan of the 22wmr round. I have said many times that the 22wmr is what the 22lr should have been:)

I also like the Winchester rifle you mention in 22wmr. Not finding a like new specimen to buy a few weeks ago, I bought a new Henry Golden Boy in 22wmr. The Henry really surprised me on the accuracy right out of the box and is the smoothest 22wmr rifle I have shot. The octagon barrel is heavier, but the extra heft of the rifle for me makes for good handling and almost no recoil at all. I think the weight helps my accuracy and pleasure shooting it.

Whatever you decide, enjoy it to the fullest and never look back!
