357 Noise

I was next to a a fellow shooting a .45-70 Guide Gun, ported, with hot handloads. Obnoxious doesn't begin to cover it. I hung in there for the first ten shots or so, then I retreated until he finished shooting.

another fellow, some months later, was shooting his .50BMG with the massive rearward-facing blast deflector. From the other end of the range - 120' or more - the blast was uncomfortable! I went and stood behing him until he was finished.

Both times I ceased shooting and waited for them to finish.

At other times it's been me with the Magnums that have caused discomfort. Live and let live...

Q

Complaints AT A RANGE about your boom being to loud? If they can't handle being around the loud boom, even with hearing protection on they need to lift up their skirts and waltz down to another lane.

Uh huh to this and all of the other moronic "he-man" statements. As someone who just today went to the ENT folks and found out about how much my hearing loss is, and having shot inside and outside with loud guns going off around me - they still hurt - even with plugs and muffs. You folks need to grow up and mature - hearing loss is cumulative and it never goes away - it has nothing to do with being "macho", typically just immature.

Want quieter loads? Shoot 38's and save the 357 for outdoor ranges where you're not shooting from under a cover

Both Speer and Buffalo Bore make a special round that has less recoil, flash reduced powder, and less BANG.

I would recommend the Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel .357. There is a slight noticeable difference.

Oneounceload, it is not a matter of macho B/S, for me. It’s a mater of practically; I’m limited to an indoor range. It is the only option within an hour drive of my home, and more importantly I’m from the old school of you practice with what you carry, so I shoot 150 –200 .357 Magnum rounds every range session. I always request the far right or left lane, so hopefully this helps others somewhat.

I don’t say much when the person with a new “wonder autoloader” runs his target out 10 feet and empties a 15 round clip as fast as he can, throwing hot casings into my lane and in one case onto my hand:eek:, so they can try and tolerate the nose from this old mans wheel gun.

I'm a member at a indoor range that allows ALL pistol calibers including the 500 Magnum. If people can not handle the noise then they should either leave (and come back another time or day) or use plugs AND muffs. Why should I be told to stop shooting because somebody can't deal with the big boom my gun makes...sarcasm. Its my range time. If he does not have enough hearing protection or does not know what to do to protect his hearing that's not my fault or problem. He should not be there then. They will be hearing gun fire in a enclosed area, so protect you ears! This is not the movies...gun fire is loud and can be extremely loud depending on the firearm.
The concussion part of firing a large / powerful handgun ..well, I'm pretty much use to it and kind of like it... ya call me strange I guess. Again if you cant handle that then move over or leave and come back later. Why should you or I tell anyone what they can or can not shoot if they are with-in the rules? You and I are responsible for our own hearing.
I am going to practice and enjoy my shooting, with certain rounds. I paid for my membership and I am in the guide lines of the rules, if other members and non-members don't like it than submit a "noise complaint". I'm sure the owners and staff members will get a kick out of it.

I am not a fan of indoor ranges because of the concussion and the closed environment

357 is a standard round...nothing out of the ordinary at any range

besides, I imagine that you spent the same amount for your range time as they did

Thanks for the replies. I will say it is pretty sill for these people to complain about noise in a range as they empty mag after mag of 9mm+p+ ammo. As for me I prefer outdoor range the indoor gallery is closer and cheaper. Now for HD I always prefer 38s, but as an armed guard i prefer to be proficient with magnum ammo for street use.

wow the only thing that ever bothers me at the range is semi autos flinging hot brass casings at my head while I am trying to shoot. Now that is bothersome. Don't worry about your noise, that's what hearing protection is for.

If I'm there when one of the boys comes in with his recently acquired Wonderboomer that shakes the chains off the sprockets of the target carriers, I just step outside for a bit and wait him out, he can only have so much ammo, right?

Most times the gunfire around me dosen't bother me and it's kind of interesting to see what sort of groups or patterns the shooters next to me are getting. But every now and then someone will come in with something that sounds like a stick of dynamite going off at each shot!

Luckily the gun shop side of the range has a good selection to browse thru while I wait them out, but that can get expensive! Now that I think about it thats been the case when I've made most of my purchases at that shop.

I wonder if they've got me figured out? :)

Let's get this straight...

These people came to the range ill prepared for noise and had the audacity to complain so that he would not shoot and enjoy his gun , so they could enjoy theirs. This smacks me as a form of arrogance , to say the least, that should not go unchallenged.

If someone else at the range has a gun so loud that I don't like it, I figure that's my problem not theirs, and I keep my mouth shut. (don't want everybody to think I'm a wuss! :D) I kind of expect the same when I'm shooting something really loud, which I do occasionally. It's a gun range; it's supposed to be loud.

(some hearing protection really isn't up to snuff tho')

Snicker

I remember when I lived on Galveston and had a day off midweek so went over to the Texas City range for some trigger time.

There was a female Dr from UTMB ahead of me checking in (nice looking woman - all the range staff showed a great deal of deference to her - of course when I checked in they sort of shrugged at me, being a regular and a poorly dressed male at that :D).

Anyways, we got down to the range, the session started and she was about 4 lanes to my right, popping off with an expensive looking .380 (SIG?) and I started with running a couple of standard caps thu my G19.

Then, hoping to start up a conversation with her, decided to make some noise, so I loaded up my 686+ with some UMC 158 gr head bangers. You know , the ones without the flash suppressing powder which make a nice big orange flame to compliment the typical BOOM of a .357.

Ok - BOOM BOOM BOOM etc. Dumped the empties, was about to drop a S/L home with a further 7 when noticed she was now behind me.

"What are you shooting?" she asked wide eyed - and a bit white faced.

".357 ma'am - want to try a few rounds?" She shook her head saying she didn't want to hurt her hands (a surgeon maybe). I just grinned and told her to not worry about her hands - the concussion might get her first . She laughed, went back to shooting her .380 and just to give her some peace I went back to shooting my G19 until she left.

However, in all fairness I've seem some women bang away with some hand cannons / big bore rifles and not bat an eyelash while doing it. Indeed, more and more women these days seem to be coming to the range with some pretty pricey and potent hardware.
