I have been reloading for the 45-70 a little and I'm looking for pet loads from other reloaders.

I'm only looking for loads using a 405gr cast bullet and either 4198 or AA5744 ONLY!

I don't have a lot of components so I'm asking you all what your favorite loads using those components are. NO OTHER POWDERS PLEASE! I know every rifle is different but many times a good load is a good load in more than 1 rifle.

I'm looking for Trapdoor pressure loads using a 405gr Cast bullet. I'm using a CCI-200 primer.
The two loads I have been trying out are:
34.0gr H4198
29.0gr AA5744
I think I like AA5744 more than 4198 so I will probably be working with that powder most. Please, only your pet loads you have personally shot and please do not suggest other powders. The only other powder I would have considered was IMR SR4759 but since I have none left and it's going to be discontinued at the end of the year I'm going to bypass using hard to find and expensive components to work up loads using SR4759.

Thank you...

25 grs of 5744 has worked better for me than going on up to 28. Winchester cases also seem better for smokeless powder in my rifles and Remington for the blackpowder.

No I don't have the exact velocity numbers at the moment, but if memory serves it was spot on (with 10 fps) of 70 grs 2f bp. Accuracy wasn't spectacular, not bad either, but was 2 moa or less.

I like the h4198 loading. I use that for slower rounds out of my marlin. Usually running between 30g and 35g for those. I believe the 35g was around 1400 fps with a 405 cast from an 18inch barrel.
Accuracy was very good, 3 inches or better at 100 yards without a scope. Sights are a bit big for that range, so I expect the load is hampered by my shooting lol.

I think I would try at a bit under 30g h4198 and see how it shoots!

are you also using a corn meal filler?

dprice,
I appreciate the load data but that's not what I asked for. I already checked the site you linked to and many more. I have about 2 dozen load manuals too. I have even made and shot several different loads.

I specifically asked for only the 2 powders I listed and only loads you shot yourself.

I'm interested too in performance of 5744 with 405s.
How accurate is the 29gr load ArchAngel?

No cast reference would be complete without mention of the pistol powder, 2400. Don't use a filler and you can try 22 to 25 grains for that bullet. With barrels shorter than 26 inches, I like the full 25 grains. I have had excellent accuracy using winchester primers and starline cases. This load with normal wheelwright alloy gives me 1480fps out of my Marlin 22 inch. It's been very deadly on hogs, and is my favorite hunting load. I used to use much more power, but found it was not necessary.

This is not a trapdoor load, according to Lyman 47. It is a Marlin load.

My loads for the other powders are not as accurate.

31gr, of H-4198
27gr. Of 5744

both are 170 fps slower or so.

I use 27 or 28 grains of 5744 for all the -70 cartridges and have found it to be okay. It easily equals BP ballistics but I still prefer using black powder.

And don't let Don fool you, it may not be accurate by HIS standards but the stuff is pretty good, 2 MOA. I am getting 2-3MOA in my 1873 and similar in a rolling block.

It's hard to tell. I'm shooting a Trapdoor with the original iron sights and I have old eyes. I didn't get a chance to shoot off a bench but up in the woods I was hitting soda cans @ 50 yards. When I get to the formal range I'll set up grid targets and the chrono and have a lot more information to share.

It looks like I just might have to drop my AA5744 load back a little...

I use 34 gr of IMR4198 behind the old Remington 400 gn softpoint, and it isn't a bad load - but I've not yet tried it behind my cast lead 405 gr bullets - hope to get to that in the next month or so though. With the Remington 400 softpoint, it is chrono'ed at 1360 FPS avg out of my 22" 1895 barrel and is about 2-3 MOA. I've not tried AA5744 but will be atching this thread to see if maybe I should add it to a shopping list.
