45-70...out of the box accuracy

Just got a new 1895GG this morning. Considering going hunting tomorrow morning with it. If I do, I'll be hunting over a food plot about 65 yards long. Will my Marlin be accurate enough out of the box for this shot? I don't want to take an irresponsible shot. I shot it today at about 25 yards and hit the target I was aiming at...knot hole on a tree.

I'll get it scoped before long. Help me out quick if you think this is a mistake.

I would suggest to you that if you were dead on at 25 yards, then you should be within an inch one way or the other at 65 yards ... which should be accurate enough to take anything you'd be going after with it.

Still, there is nothing like the confidence factor that you have after putting a few dozen rounds through such a gun.

Take it with you and if you get the shot, take it!

I owned a ballard-rifled 1895 - it was the most accurate lever gun I've ever fired. It was capable of doing 1.5" groups at 100 yds with factory ammo.

I never used it, though, so I eventually traded it. I don't quite regret the trade - yes, I do.

Mossy, haven't you shot your rifle yet? Don't go hunting with ANY rifle that hasn't been zeroed in!

Your Marlin will be plenty enough accurate out to 150 yards once you've zeroed it in at the range.

He was talking about using iron sites that he has used at 25 yards accurately. I agree with you if he intends on using a scope (or even iron sites) ... without zeroing/testing.
