Has anyone chronographed both of these loads in the same gun? They both use the same Barnes bullet but the Taurus HEX is $5 cheaper per box in my area. That's a big price difference considering they both come in 20 round boxes.

Based on their manufacturer's claims:

Cor-Bon claims 1075 fps for 475 ft/lbs. of energy. Taurus claims 995 fps for 406 ft/lbs. of energy. Cor-Bon states that their round is +P, while Taurus is specifically not +P, but standard pressure. Given that the "+P" rating usually indicates a pressure of up to (but not more than) 10% over SAAMI specs for the round, the velocity difference between the two seems about right. Also, AFAIK, Barnes does produce the bullets for both rounds, but Taurus specifically claim that their round is "notched" for lower-velocity expansion, so it might be modified - I can't tell from photographs on the respective Web sites.

That should clear up any misunderstanding.

The two loads use the identical unaltered bullet from Barnes. The velocity difference means that the lower velocity load from Taurus will expand to a greater final stop diameter. Seems that the opposite would be true, but here is the reason... The petals on the lower velocity Taurus load expand out to a perpendicular angle to the bullet shank, thus achieving maximum final diameter, while the greater velocity of the Cor Bon load cause the petals to continue curling back into the bullet shank, and resulting in a smaller final diameter. This is all based on ballistic gel tests which only compares the two bullets to each other in an identical medium. The gel results may or may not reflect real world results. For my money, I would think the Cor Bon load would be more effective, because the same large diameter as the Taurus load is reached while the bullet retains more velocity, and then continues on past that point for more penetration. YMMV....

I have shot 100 of the DPX out of my Colt Defender, with no apparent copper fouling.
